Inside Care of Outsiders: The Art of Hospitality

A shared space does not mean “community.” It is oftentimes like that in church, where outside of the pews there is no sharing. Hospitality has two senses in the bible: welcoming of outsiders – strangers that we do not know at all, and welcoming of we know – neighbors, or church members that with whom we do not have a special relationship. So, when we talk about hospitality, we're talking about the inside care of outsiders.

The worst thing that could happen to our fellowship is the loss of unity. It's not enough for us to want unity, or even enough for us to all agree that unity is what we need. In Phillipians 2, we will be looking at the 'why' of unity, the 'what' -- what it really looks like -- and the 'how.'

Our Chief End

To live is Christ and to die is gain.

The scariest thing in the world is to not know why I'm here. Do I have a purpose that truly defines me? I can look for answers in many places, but find that self-defined goals are temporal – they are only valid for as long as I decide they are, because they do not come from above.

Re:Thinking the Christian Life - Politics

We have as many political nuts in the church as outside, and we have Christians who shun politics altogether. Scripture, however, does not allow us to be uninvolved. Politics is hard, not only because the issues are hard, but because we live in two kingdoms. It's hard to figure out how to navigate through the political landscape while living both in the kingdom of God, and the kingdom of man.

Re:Thinking the Christian Life - Evangelism

When we start talking about evangelism many Christians I know either get bored or nervous. We think we've heard it all before, or feel guilt over our reluctance to share Christ with others. Paul's words to the Ephesians are helpful in correcting and directing our thoughts and practices concering one of our greatest privileges.

We tend to take a lot of our faith for granted. We settle for what we know or what we think we know and sometimes we get it wrong. In rethinking Christianity we're going back to something ancient, not going forward to something new. Today we're going to re-think the church.

It's easy for us to presume that we understand how we should think of the basics of the Christian life because we are so actively engaged in the disciplines or activities. We should take a step back in most of these areas. We need to learn how to think of them biblically. Nothing more needs a fresh perspective than quiet time.

Readings on Christmas Eve

Our kids get excited because they're getting presents on Jesus' birthday. Doesn't that seem backwards? Shouldn't we be bringing gifts, rather than receiving them. But the Magi weren't bringing birthday gifts to the Christ child. Years after Jesus' birth, the Magi seek Him out, prostrate themselves and present their offerings, their tangible acts of worship. The great gift of Christmas is Christ himself.

The Gospel and Marriage

The diet pill and exercise machine commercials always say the same thing: "Results not typical." Seeing the picture of the ideal is compelling for a while, but most of us remain skeptical. A lot of us view marriage the same way. We know it's supposed to be good; it's supposed to be a blessing. We hear testimonies from people who have phenomenal marriages, but ... results not typical. Marriage is a blessing, but our marriages are broken because we are broken. The gospel will redeem our marriages. The law shows the way, and gospel shows us the purpose and the gospel also brings about the transformation of our marriages.

For many Christians the gospel becomes just the starting point of the Christian life, the baby food of the Christian life. We don't believe that here.
Origins: Failing in Faith

When I first became a Christian, I had a tendency to lift Godly men to an unrealistic level, almost like an idol. There is danger in idolizing our heroes, because it creates a distance between them and us. We compare ourselves to our heroes instead of finding hope in the gospel alone.

Origins: Intervention

An intervention is a process where friends and family confront somebody, most often dealing with drugs and alcohol. The goal is to immediately get the person into rehab or counseling so he can become the person he is supposed to be. Intervention works because it is a confrontation of grace, stemming from love and affection. "Divine intervention" is often expected to be dramatic, near-miraculous, flashy, huge and immediately life-altering. In Genesis 12, we see a more subtle divine intervention, one that we can study to learn more about Abram, more about God and, hopefully, a little bit about ourselves.

Origins: Your Whole Life Ahead of You

None of knows how long we're going to live, but at every moment that passes your whole life that is right in front of you. Regardless of your age, all of what God wants of you is in front of you: people He wants you to love and to forgive, what He wants you to do for yourself and for others. A story like Noah after the flood helps us to get a better understanding of what we're supposed to with the whole life that lies in front of you.
