The Unmerciful Servant

We all struggle to forgive others, particularly those closest to us. Jesus tells this parable to reveal the importance of forgiving others. We are only able to do this as we see their sin in light of ours against God, and focus on Christ's sacrifice for our redemption, the forgiveness of sin.

The Pharisee, the Tax Collector and You

Acceptance with God is not the result of our goodness- in fact, God hates self-righteousness and pride. Those who look for God's provision of an atoning sacrifice are accepted.

The Sower, the Seed and the Soil

Jesus tells this parable to help the disciples understand the realities of ministry, and to warn the people to listen to God carefully lest the Word not bear fruit for the kingdom in their lives.

Doing Good

Paul describes the Spirit-led community, which practices love, through a series of commands. We are able to live this way because of what Christ has done for us, and is doing in us. He also works thru us to develop healthy community.

A New Creation

The resurrection of Jesus initiated the new creation. All who trust Him are united to Him and participate in the new creation even as we await the renewal of creation at His return. Until then, we live under the influence of the new creation- doing good, loving others and going on mission.

Boasting in the Cross

Paul is wrapping up his letter to the churches in Galatia trying to focus their attention away from circumcision to the cross. We tend to move away from the cross, as evidenced by the things churches and ministers boast about. Paul delighted in Jesus' work on the cross, and his own weakness which magnified Jesus work.

Walking by the Spirit Part 2

Paul contrasts the works of the flesh with the fruit of the Spirit as he discusses the shape our freedom is to take. The indwelling Spirit leads us to obey God out of love, in part by leading us to a greater knowledge of God and our position in Christ. We are responsible to keep in step with Him that Christ may be formed in us.

Walking By the Spirit Part 1

Paul moves from our great privilige to our great responsibility- to walk in/by the Spirit. It is founded on the graces of justification & adoption, and is the grace of sanctification. It has both positive and negative aspects: the fruit of the Spirit & the putting to death of the desires of the flesh. This sermon covers putting sin to death.

An Illustration: Hagar and Sarah

Paul resumes his argument from the Old Testament to show that the Galatians are being wrongly enslaved by the false teachers. He points out that Abraham had more than one son, but only one was the heir, according to the promise. Hagar and Sarah represent the Old and New Covenants, Law and Gospel, slavery and free sons.
