Psalm 8

1 O Lord, our Lord, your majestic name fills the earth!
      Your glory is higher than the heavens.
2 You have taught children and infants
      to tell of your strength,[b]
   silencing your enemies
      and all who oppose you.
3 When I look at the night sky and see the work of your fingers—
      the moon and the stars you set in place—
4 what are mere mortals that you should think about them,
      human beings that you should care for them?[c]
5 Yet you made them only a little lower than God[d]
      and crowned them[e] with glory and honor.
6 You gave them charge of everything you made,
      putting all things under their authority—
7 the flocks and the herds
      and all the wild animals,
8 the birds in the sky, the fish in the sea,
      and everything that swims the ocean currents.

9 O Lord, our Lord, your majestic name fills the earth!

Psalm 121

When we come to God all our problems are solved… Right? When we embark on relationship with the Almighty, one thing we can absolutely count on is that all our problems, all our “issues” all the hard parts of life get solved, smoothed out… dealt with.
And should we find pain or difficulty or suffering in our lives? That’s a sure sign that God has left us, has rejected us, is in fact punishing us…

Psalm 116

1 I love the LORD, for he heard my voice;
       he heard my cry for mercy.

2 Because he turned his ear to me,
       I will call on him as long as I live.

3 The cords of death entangled me,
       the anguish of the grave [a] came upon me;
       I was overcome by trouble and sorrow.

4 Then I called on the name of the LORD :
       "O LORD, save me!"

5 The LORD is gracious and righteous;
       our God is full of compassion.

6 The LORD protects the simplehearted;
       when I was in great need, he saved me.

7 Be at rest once more, O my soul,
       for the LORD has been good to you.

8 For you, O LORD, have delivered my soul from death,
       my eyes from tears,
       my feet from stumbling,

9 that I may walk before the LORD
       in the land of the living.

10 I believed; therefore [b] I said,
       "I am greatly afflicted."

11 And in my dismay I said,
       "All men are liars."

12 How can I repay the LORD
       for all his goodness to me?

13 I will lift up the cup of salvation
       and call on the name of the LORD.

14 I will fulfill my vows to the LORD
       in the presence of all his people.

15 Precious in the sight of the LORD
       is the death of his saints.

16 O LORD, truly I am your servant;
       I am your servant, the son of your maidservant [c] ;
       you have freed me from my chains.

17 I will sacrifice a thank offering to you
       and call on the name of the LORD.

18 I will fulfill my vows to the LORD
       in the presence of all his people,

19 in the courts of the house of the LORD—
       in your midst, O Jerusalem.
       Praise the LORD. [d]

James 5:10-20

10 For examples of patience in suffering, dear brothers and sisters, look at the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. 11 We give great honor to those who endure under suffering. For instance, you know about Job, a man of great endurance. You can see how the Lord was kind to him at the end, for the Lord is full of tenderness and mercy.

12 But most of all, my brothers and sisters, never take an oath, by heaven or earth or anything else. Just say a simple yes or no, so that you will not sin and be condemned.

The Power of Prayer

13 Are any of you suffering hardships? You should pray. Are any of you happy? You should sing praises. 14 Are any of you sick? You should call for the elders of the church to come and pray over you, anointing you with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 Such a prayer offered in faith will heal the sick, and the Lord will make you well. And if you have committed any sins, you will be forgiven.
16 Confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results. 17 Elijah was as human as we are, and yet when he prayed earnestly that no rain would fall, none fell for three and a half years! 18 Then, when he prayed again, the sky sent down rain and the earth began to yield its crops.

Restore Wandering Believers

19 My dear brothers and sisters, if someone among you wanders away from the truth and is brought back, 20 you can be sure that whoever brings the sinner back will save that person from death and bring about the forgiveness of many sins.

James 5:1-9

There is a downward pull to the Gospel- it’s the same downward pull that brought Jesus to a dirty, dusty, barren place like Nazareth, and it’s the same downward pull that should move us into action. God gives us what he gives us for a reason. Don’t feel guilty about having a good job and earning good money. Feel guilty if you fail to use it wisely. Those who truly get the Gospel feel it’s downward pull and find that being like Jesus isn’t just about morality- though that’s part, or ethics, though that’s part. It’s not just about being nice and playing by the rules, or about getting my spiritual needs met. It’s about participating in God’s redemptive plan in the world- living in such a way that we see more and more people in relationship with Jesus and more and more people experiencing the justice and peace in whatever way possible, even limited or temporary that ultimately will come when Jesus Himself returns.

I want to live in reality. And that means that we submit ourselves to God in humility. That means we stop pretending we are God by judging other people and making plans as if we were in control of our future. That means we start living as if we really trust God with our lives.

James 3:1-12

1 Dear brothers and sisters,[a] not many of you should become teachers in the church, for we who teach will be judged more strictly. 2 Indeed, we all make many mistakes. For if we could control our tongues, we would be perfect and could also control ourselves in every other way.
3 We can make a large horse go wherever we want by means of a small bit in its mouth. 4 And a small rudder makes a huge ship turn wherever the pilot chooses to go, even though the winds are strong. 5 In the same way, the tongue is a small thing that makes grand speeches.

   But a tiny spark can set a great forest on fire. 6 And the tongue is a flame of fire. It is a whole world of wickedness, corrupting your entire body. It can set your whole life on fire, for it is set on fire by hell itself.[b]

7 People can tame all kinds of animals, birds, reptiles, and fish, 8 but no one can tame the tongue. It is restless and evil, full of deadly poison. 9 Sometimes it praises our Lord and Father, and sometimes it curses those who have been made in the image of God. 10 And so blessing and cursing come pouring out of the same mouth. Surely, my brothers and sisters, this is not right! 11 Does a spring of water bubble out with both fresh water and bitter water? 12 Does a fig tree produce olives, or a grapevine produce figs? No, and you can’t draw fresh water from a salty spring.[c]

James 1:1-4

The book of James starts with a difficult passage, one that seems paradoxical. Joy coming from suffering seems very strange and impossible to most of us today, but perhaps James is pointing to suffering joy in a different way than you and I often do.

In Jesus, God demonstrates His holiness, His righteousness, yes, that’s what the cross is about… but most of all, this whole thing happened all those years ago so that God could show you His mercy. So that even if He judges all the wrong in the world, no one who doesn’t want to face that judgment need do so. God has kept His word. God has given us a Savior.

Advent 1- Malachi 4 and Luke 1

God breaks His silence of 400 years in a spectacular way- sending this angel to appear to the priestly representative of the people. God is silent, and then God speaks. Zechariah won’t listen. He questions. So God strikes him… silent.
And now, all he can do is listen…

Psalm 42- intimacy with God and Community

Anyone ever hear this phrase: “If God feels far away, guess who moved?”
I heard that a lot growing up- And it was always thrown around to say that if God felt distant, it certainly wasn’t God’s fault- it was yours. I’m not sure that’s necessarily true… It may be that you have walked away from God, that you’ve ceased to pay attention to what He’s saying and have ceased to spend time being present to Him- and so you feel far away. But I think that sometimes, there’s something else going on…
