God's Work, and Ours (2 Corinthians 5:16-21)

The responsibility of the church is to continue and build on the work that God is doing in the world. There is no "I" in church -- the church is a community of believers that focuses on the will of God, not on individual agendas.

The Face of Longing (Luke 18:18-30)

Can you picture what it looks like to see longing on another person’s face? It is a complex expression. It can be a mixture of tenderness and sadness, belief and disappointment. Longing is a powerful emotion.

The Bible tells us that God longs. Isaiah 30:18 says that “the Lord longs to be gracious to you; the Lord rises to show you compassion.” In the Gospels, Jesus looked out over the crowd of people and said that he longed to gather them under his wings as hen would gather her chicks. Paul said that we often don’t know how to pray for ourselves, but the Holy Spirit intercedes for us, with longings too deep for words.

Can you envision Jesus’ face with an expression of longing – a look that sees right into your heart, wanting to call out our very best? When we experience Jesus’ longing for us, sometimes it is uncomfortable, especially if what he wants for us isn’t what we want for ourselves … yet Jesus longs for us to embrace the life he knows we are capable of and to live by values that matter to his kingdom. If we could see his face, it would be full of passion, just as it was the day a certain young man came to see him with something important on his mind.

The Face of Welcome (Luke 19:1-10)

If Jesus’ face of welcome is a mirror of his heart, what attitudes refined this disposition? At the heart of welcome is an attitude of generosity. When Jesus looked at Zacchaeus, he felt warmth and kindness. He saw him as a valuable human being, rather than a disgraceful man.

Jesus saw beyond Zacchaeus’ crooked vocation, into his heart. He saw him as a person with worth. To Christ, Zacchaeus wasn’t defined by his sin and brokenness, but by his dignity as a human being. Jesus recognized in him a heart that needed to be watered with love and genuine interest. Jesus felt compassion, not pity; possibilities, not weaknesses.

Glimpses of Glory (Luke 9:28-43)

We change from glory to glory in our lives, and God wants to reveal God’s glory to us and through us. And we are all meant to see ourselves as a part of something bigger – something vital. And our perspective is changed when we see Christ in our midst and when we view the world around us through the love of Christ, through the eyes of God.
