Almost Christian

Mark 12:28-34

For many of the religious leaders in Jesus' day, loving God boiled down to keeping countless pious rituals: ceremonial handwashing, reciting long prayers, rejecting certain foods, staying away from people who were "unclean", etc. But Jesus presents a very different barometer for measuring one's love for God.

Like Angels in Heaven

Mark 12:18-27

Because of the brevity of human existence, and the fact that we are, as John Calvin said, always only one misstep from devastating peril, we have a very difficult time grasping the concept of everlasting life, where death no longer threatens. The mere notion brings up so many questions: What's it going to be like? What will we be doing? What will be the same and what will be different?

Jesus and Politics

Mark 12:13-17

As Christians, what posture should we take toward our government? Should we be constant critics, sharing our disgust with anyone who will listen, or should we retreat for the hills, recognizing the seemingly endless disappointment of political leadership? Or is there a
more balanced biblical position?

The Authority of the Cornerstone

Mark 11:27-12:12

After all that Jesus has shown with his teaching and actions this far into his earthly ministry, the religious leaders still question whom he is. Their hatred for him is seen in their desire to trap
Jesus and have cause to put him to death. Jesus uses their questioning as an opportunity to show once again he truly is the Son of God, and to remind them through a parable of their hearts, which stand in opposition to God and their need for repentance.

The One We Worship

Matthew 2:2-12

Even a cursory reading of the life of Jesus reveals that he has a polarizing effect on people. Those who receive him tend to do so eagerly, while those who reject him often do so angrily. And this opposition to Jesus is less about what he does and more about who he is. In fact, before Jesus ever utters a word - even at the news of his birth - the responses to him are strong and varied.

The Tables Are Turned

Mark 11:12-25

Jesus said in Matthew's gospel: A good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. In John's gospel, Jesus cautioned that if a tree doesn't bear good fruit, it is thrown in the trash and burned. But that begs a question: What is fruit, and how do we know that we are bearing the good stuff?

The Calm Before the Storm

Mark 11:1-11

What's the role of emotion in a Christian's worship (and life)? How do we avoid following so-called mountaintop spiritual experiences with devastating and unexpected lows? In the first day of Jesus' last week on earth, he continues to (subtly) separate those who "get it" and those who don't. And we see that neither emotion nor intellectual prowess alone leads to continued devotion to Christ.

Why Insight is Better Than Eyesight

Mark 10:46-52

Who gets into the kingdom of heaven? We know that we can't get in by doing enough good deeds, that entrance comes by faith in Christ alone, but what does saving faith look like? And if salvation is by faith alone, what place is there for good works?

Greatness Redefined

Mark 10:32-45

What does it mean to be truly great? Our world can define it as having a single-minded ambition toward a set of goals that allows us to reap the greatest amount of reward, regardless of the effect on others. Christ, after predicting his suffering, death and resurrection at the hand of the Gentiles, goes on to redefine what true greatness really looks like. According to Christ, those who desire to truly be great must be willing to be the humble servant of others.
