Why They/ You/ I Need the Church - Reason 2

Ephesians 2:19-22

God is everywhere. At all times. There's no place we can go to hide from his presence. But the Scriptures teach us that God is uniquely present in some places. For example, the Psalmist declares that God is especially close to the brokenhearted. With that said, is God
closer to his people when they're together than He is when they're apart?

Why They/ You/ I Need the Church - Reason 1

Hebrews 10:19-25

The church is not perfect. Yet. And many of us have seen her in her ugly, sin-tainted nakedness.

But God still thinks the church is beautiful. God still calls the church his bride. And the church is still the vehicle through which God has determined to make known the mystery of Christ, which is the gospel. If Jesus died for the church, is it acceptable for us to refuse to live in it?

From Inside These Walls (The Gospel Advances)

Colossians 4:7-18

We have a lot of stuff.

What would it be like to do ministry without cell phones, internet, iPads, and Kindle? Could we still lead people into growing relationships with Jesus? What if our electricity were turned off and we couldn't get it working again? What if we were displaced from this beautiful building? Evicted from our property? What if our freedom to worship God were stolen from us?

Could we still do ministry? More importantly: would the gospel be forever halted?

Pray. Act. Speak

Colossians 4:2-6

The Christian life is an outwardly focused life. We do what we do because of what God has already done for us. Because God has changed us, we seek to become agents of change. Because God has forgiven us, we are quick to forgive others. Because God has reconciled us to himself, we become ministers of reconciliation.

To "get" the gospel is to embrace God's mission.

Rediscovering God's Design for the Family

Colossians 3:18-4:1

We're losing the family.

It wasn't that long ago that lifelong monogamy was considered a noble (not laughable) goal; premarital sex was discouraged; parents established the rules for the home, not their children; and husbands accepted the responsibility for leading the rest of their family. Those days are gone. But are the "glory days" really what they're cracked up to be? What is God's blueprint for relationships in the home?

The Gospel-Centered Church

Colossians 3:16-17

Christians need the gospel.

Throughout his letter to the Colossians, Paul preached the gospel to Christians. Yet, we have a tendency to conclude that once we become followers of Christ, we're done with the gospel. The good news becomes old news, and we set our sights on "deeper things." But is it possible that in our pursuit of spirituality, we've left the gospel behind?

The Truth About Love

Colossians 3:12-15

Love is the ultimate trump card. It is the argument that ends all arguments. It is the justification for behavior that seems irrational. "But we love each other," says the couple who rejects counsel and insists on heading down a path laden with obstacles. "But I'm in love," pleads the young woman who's smitten by the man with no car, no job and no prospects. How do you argue with two people in love?

Well, what if our definition of love is all wrong?

Becoming the Person You Already Are

Colossians 3:1-11

Every person who is "in Christ" has gone through an incredible transformation. If you're a Christian you've been drastically and miraculously changed. God has taken your stony heart and replaced it with a heart that is spiritually alive and able to respond to Him.

If you're a Christian, your "old self" has died. You’ve been made into a new person. Your affections (what you love), your interests (what you like to do), and your priorities, have all been divinely re-aligned.

Now, the task is living according to the person that you really are.

'Improving' the Gospel

Colossians 2:16-23

If someone gives us something that we've worked hard for, we're not going to necessarily look at the giver as a loving person. When you pick up your paycheck after working 50 hours in a week, you don't think, "Man, they really love me!" No, you probably think, "I've had that coming for two weeks now."

If we get the good things we deserve, we don't feel loved, we feel adequately compensated. Fairly treated. But if we're given good things that we don't deserve, then we feel loved.

Legalism dupes us into thinking we're simply getting from God what we deserve. But that's a dangerous place to be.
