Follow Jesus

Hebrews 12:1-3

How will Northpoint endure in Gospel ministry? What gives me the kind of endurance I need to thrive and not just survive? Your endurance is all about fixing your eyes on the endurance of Jesus. Weariness in life and ministry comes as we reach for other weapons in the fight of life than the Gospel. We must, now and forever, in California and Ohio, Consider Jesus so we will endure with a strong heart and a powerful life to the very end.

Rejecting the Savior

Luke 23:8-25

As Jesus moves to the cross, Luke increasingly highlights His innocence, and the gross suspension of justice necessary to His death sentence. But along the way, we the readers are forced to ask ourselves important questions: what are we doing with Jesus? and what has His death to do with us?

Who is in Charge

Luke 22:54-23:7

In 4 interrelated episodes, Luke shows that Jesus has been rejected at every level. In each case, the question revolves around who Jesus is! And, amazingly, in all four cases they miss the truth, even though it is right in front of them! This can only be explained one way: God's predetermined plan and foreknowledge have brought about this seemingly tragic set of circumstances precisely so that the Cross will be a reality.

Grief in the Garden

Luke 22:39-53

In the hours following Jesus' amazing redefining of the traditional Passover, His disciples display the extent of their lack of insight into His message. Seemingly in a state of bewildered panic, they display the true nature of their hopes while Christ patiently points them to the ways of His Kingdom. In His Kingdom, greatness is measured by humility, not assertion. In His Kingdom, the road to ruling will be long and hard and the weapons of warfare are not physical. Yet, despite His continual teaching of the Disciples, they fail to grasp His message and trust His promises and commands. This leads them to their darkest hour, where they ignore their help, they violently assert themselves and then run away in fear and shame.

The Passover Road

Luke 22:24-38

Jesus has just redefined the Passover to focus on the rescue and victory gained through His death on the cross. Amazingly, after hearing of the significance of the cross and that one of them would betray Jesus, the disciples pridefully move from discussing who the betrayer would be to who it could not be. It could not be the one who was the greatest. As they argue about who is the greatest, Jesus answers their self-focused response by redefining greatness in light of the Passover road…that victory and rescue comes through humble service and sacrifice as seen perfectly in Jesus.

The Passover and the Cross

Luke 22:1-23

As Jesus nears the time of His death, Luke depicts the opposing forces that will bring it about. In this text, Satan is working to bring about Jesus' death even as Jesus uses the Passover to teach the meaning of his death. Against the backdrop of conspiracy we see Jesus completely in charge of the events and timing of His death for sinners. And we hear His explanation of it as he reinterprets the Passover elements for his disciples, initiating the Lord's Supper.

The Rescue of the Righteous

Luke 21:25-36

As He sat with His disciples on Mt. Olivet, Jesus declared that one day the Temple they all admired would be destroyed, and Jerusalem trampled under foot. Yet, this event would only be a preview of power and judgment that would accompany the return of the Son of Man. And yet, the disciples should not panic or worry. For the return of Jesus would bring about the great rescue of the righteous … the redemption we all crave.

The Consequences of False Spirituality

Luke 21:5-24

In the longer context (21:5-38) Jesus uses the destruction of Jerusalem (near future) as a preview of what to expect when He returns (far future). He shocks his disciples with a prophetic announcement that one day the Temple will be destroyed, demonstrating the perils of that hypocritical spirituality for which the Temple had become symbol. But this is only the prelude to what the final judgment will mean for all who refuse to follow the widow’s model of humble dependence upon God.

Spirituality: False and True

Luke 20:41-21:4

What does real spirituality look like, and what is at its core? In this 3-part set of instructions, Jesus warns against those who use God for their advantage, even as He makes a heroine out of a greatly disadvantaged widow. What we learn today is essential: Our spiritual health is easily measured as we answer this question: Am I using God, or is He using me?

The Hope of Resurrection

Luke 20:27-40

As Luke comes to the end of his writing project, Jesus comes to the end of His life, and speaks of the end of the age. And it is as the "end" is beginning that we come to understand the vital place of hope in the life of those charged with extending the Kingdom authority of God through the gospel. For Christ-followers, "resurrection" is more than an event; it is the recognition that God wins in the end, and all creation is liberated from the chains and corruption of sin.

Stewards of the Story in Our Speaking

2 Timothy 2:23-26; 1 Peter 3:15

For too many years "evangelism" has been understood as "us vs. them." It has largely been seen as "telling", and has, in our day, even turned at times to "yelling." But, is this true to the Gospel and the model we find in Jesus? What does it mean to "speak" the Gospel in the course of life, among the people with whom we live and work? Today we examine how the Apostles understood Jesus' command to share the Gospel, and we will find that it not only relates to our mouths, but also our ears, our hands, our feet ... to all of who we are in Christ!

Stewards of the Story in Our Service

Titus 2:11-14; 3:1-8

Stewarding the Story starts in our souls, transforms our hearts in silence and then works out in our service. That is, in doing good deeds that adorn the gospel, making Jesus appear to be a gracious savior.

Stewards of the Story in Our Silence

2 Timothy 1:3-12

Once we have fallen in love with the Gospel and shudder at the thought of His amazing grace, what then? Before we run after every unbeliever we know, we must learn to steward the story of the Gospel in Silence. Laboring, through the power of the Spirit, to build the inner components of spiritual character. Does your life, before you ever open your mouth to speak of Jesus, speak of Jesus? As stewards, we must carefully and diligently pay attention to our own lives so as to not obscure the story of God.

Stewards of the Story in Our Souls

Colossians 1:9-14

Every so often, we need to ask ourselves "who are we, and what are we supposed to be doing?" Maybe that should happen every day! Today we begin a 4 week series on the privilege of being entrusted with the story of God's great rescue mission through the Gospel. Today we ask the question: If the Gospel is like a multi-vitamin, do you think about "taking" it everyday?

Why I Am (Still) A Christian, part 2

Philippians 3

Christianity is being maligned today, and not just by the militant atheists. The fact that so many prominent Christian leaders have fallen into sexual, moral, and financial misconduct certainly brings the credibility of Christianity into question. So, why would any intelligent, honest, and discerning person choose to follow Christ?

Kingdom Purity: God and Caesar

Luke 20:19-26

In the second of 4 controversies, the leaders of Jerusalem try to trap Jesus in the area of politics. Do you think God's people should support a pagan ruler and a wicked regime? They think they have put Jesus into corner, but His brilliant answer not only wins the day, but also instructs our hearts as we live for God in the realm of Caesar.

Kingdom Purity: Jesus, Who Are You?

Luke 20:1-19

In Luke 20, Jesus enters into four controversies with the religious elite of Jerusalem. Their intent is to find fault in Him, but each time He demonstrates the purity of Kingdom truth. Their questions call into question His personal, political, theological, and Messianic views. But in the end, Jesus stands victorious even as the critics' anger increases. In the end, their only answer for Jesus is death on a cross.

Kingdom Practice: Jesus, the Crowd, and the Critics

Luke 19:28-48

In Jesus' day – as today! – there were conflicting opinions about God and His mission in Christ. Some in the crowd wanted to use Jesus for their own personal, spiritual purposes. Others didn't want Him at all and were actively trying to destroy all He is and stands for. But, as we watch how Jesus responded, we find a pattern for our behavior today, as we partner with Him to "seek and save the lost."

As those living in the Kingdom of God, and awaiting the return of our King Jesus, we understand that our posture must be desperate dependence and humility. But, does it really matter? Does Jesus Christ really care how we live? how we use the life, resources, and Gospel He has entrusted to us? This parable holds the answer and it is a resounding "YES!"

Kingdom Practice: A Kingdom Mission

Doctor Luke has so clearly laid out in chapter 18 the two options in trying to find acceptance before God. It's either a self-righteous performing or a desperate dependence. It is those who know how needy they are for the grace of God that He delights in and takes the initiative to save. Not only is this the posture of life in the kingdom, but this too is the mission of the Kingdom, desperate sinners who know they are glorying in a merciful Savior in front of other needy sinners.

Peter has just reminded Jesus that the disciples had left all to follow Him. Now Jesus states clearly that He is heading to the cross. But the disciples are blind to the reality of the Kingdom, and it will take the example of a lowly, blind beggar to clear things up.

Kingdom Posture: Obstacles to Obedience

Luke 18:18-30

In two Parables, Jesus has shown that the posture of Kingdom citizens: desperate persistence (the widow) combined with humble dependence (the tax collector) upon God in all things. In today's text we will see that there are serious obstacles that stand in the way of all who would deny themselves, take up the cross, and follow Christ.

Kingdom Posture: Humble Dependence

Luke 18:9-17

If the first Kingdom Posture is persistence in prayer, the second is closely tied to it: humble dependence. In this text, Jesus uses a story, and some children as vivid teaching tools in getting us to understand just how essential it is to pursue acceptance by God and relationship with Him from a position of great humility and total dependence. Anything else will have you forfeiting a place in the Kingdom!

Kingdom Posture: Persistent Prayer

Luke 18:1-8

Jesus has just reminded his disciples that there will be a period of time between his initiation of the kingdom and its glorious fulfillment (17:22-37). But the question that this forces upon the minds of all who follow Christ is this: How are we to live while waiting for his return? In chapter 18 Luke brings us Jesus' teaching on the posture we are to take as those who advance the kingdom in the midst of a broken world.

Kingdom Judgment

Luke 17:22-37

As we have learned, the Kingdom of God is in our midst. Yet, the final, culminating expression of heavenly authority awaits the return of Christ our righteous king. Today, we hear Christ Himself describe that day when the authority of heaven will be fully unleashed on creation bring terrifying judgment upon those who have not heeded the message to deny themselves, take up their cross, and follow Him.

Kingdom Reality

Luke 17:11-21

Today we return to our study through Luke's biography of Jesus Christ. The story continues with Jesus still on His way to Jerusalem where the final confrontation will take place. Along the way, Jesus is teaching all who will listen about the invasion of heavenly power that will ultimately provide rescue and reformation for a sin-corrupted creation. Jesus calls this "the kingdom of God" and the next major section of Luke's Gospel is all about this amazing redemptive mission of God.

Looking Backward, Forward, and Upward

Selected Scriptures

On this last Sunday of the year, we take an opportunity to reflect on what God, in His great faithfulness, has done in and through us this past year. But, as wonderful as the past may be, the future is where our energies must be focused as we look forward to the opportunities and challenges of 2008. And, in everything we understand that our primary focus must be on God Himself, the source of every good thing.

The Reason for Rejoicing

Luke 2:8-14

On this Fourth Sunday of Advent we turn our attention to the angels who play such an important role in the Christmas story. As created beings, they exist to serve God as His messengers. But, they also serve mankind as models of true worship. They rejoiced at the birth of Jesus Christ, but the question is why? They were in no need of rescue from sin, so why were they so jubilant? In answering this question we will discover the core of the Christmas message.

The Reality of Rejoicing

On this Third Sunday of Advent we pay particular attention to the shepherds whom God Himself chose to be the first to hear of the birth of the Promised King. It was to these, whose job it was to raise and guard the Temple lambs, that the invitation first came to worship the Lamb of God. They were the first to experience the reality that the promise of a Savior had been fulfilled.

The Humility of Rejoicing

Selected Scriptures

On this Second Sunday of Advent we pay particular attention to the great humility displayed in the birth of the Savior. Born in an obscure village, in a cave used to house animals, Jesus the Great King was certainly not given the reception He deserved. And we learn from this that, in God's Kingdom, humility always precedes honor. We also learn that, when God dwells in the midst of humility, the humble becomes honored and exalted.

The Hope of Rejoicing

Genesis 3:13-15; Is. 9:2-7; Ezekiel 34; John 10:7-27

Today is the First Sunday of Advent. Traditionally, on this day we begin our intentional reflection on the amazing miracle that is the Incarnation of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. And because the coming of Jesus into this world as a baby was promised at the beginning of time, it is appropriate to remind ourselves of that promise, and of the hope that it provided throughout the Old Testament era.

The Faith to Forgive

Luke 17:1-10

So, we've been hearing so much about the challenges of wealth and prejudice. But, are there other areas where following Christ will mean "living beyond ourselves?" In this text Jesus challenges us in the area of forgiveness. Why is it that we have such a hard time forgiving? Simply because it demands that we "live beyond" our personal sense of justice and live in light of God's commands.

Does it really matter how we live? Can we afford not to live beyond ourselves? not be wise and generous stewards of our stuff? not live in complete dependence upon God? In His longest and most complex parable, Jesus declares that the way we live now is a good indication of where we'll spend eternity. We'd better get it right!

Because Unfaithfulness Stinks

Luke 16:14-18

The preeminent obstacle to faithfulness to God in all things is my faithfulness to myself above all things. In this passage, Jesus aggressively attacks the Pharisees because they love themselves more than they love God. That is clearly seen in their unfaithfulness with their money, in their unfaithfulness to God's Word and in the justification of unfaithfulness in marriage. Unfaithfulness is a stench in the nostrils of God.

Jesus warns us not to squander his gracious presence by valuing his good gifts more than we value being with him.
Rejoicing in Restoration

Luke 15:11-32

With the memory of the Grand Banquet (14:15-24) fresh in the reader's mind, a third important question arises: Knowing that God has a heart to seek the lost, what responsibility do the lost have? Is it possible for those who have rejected God's invitation in Christ to "come home" and find a seat at the table? Answer: God does have a heart for the lost, but they will only know and experience it through the doorway of true repentance.

Luke 15:1-10

With the memory of the Grand Banquet (14:15-24) fresh in the reader's mind, the question arises: Why would a wealthy host want to let his house be filled with the poor, blind, crippled, and lame? And even more, why would he invite total strangers – foreigners! – to his banquet? Knowing that God has historically chosen to lead and feed His people through His Word, it only makes sense that those who want to live in ever deepening relationship with Him will become dedicated, lifelong learners. Yet, learning that is not connected to, and motivated by, a desire for growing, authentic relationship with Jesus Christ will end up producing a proud dogmatism that both produces stubbornness in the soul and division in the church.

Our Purpose, Our Privilege, Our Passion, Part One

Colossians 1:28, 29

As we start a new ministry year, it is always important to remember the basics of who we are and what we are trying to accomplish. For years we have found Colossians 1:28 to be a helpful summary of our mission. During September, we will take time to remind ourselves of the grand privilege that is ours as fellow-laborers with Christ in the building of complete people, to the glory of God.

Josiah: The Heart of a Reformer

2 Chronicles 34-35

As the southern kingdom of Judah comes closer to its end and Babylonian captivity draws near, we meet a great reformer king - the man Josiah. Due to the hard heartedness of the previous kings, idolatry had run rampant and the Law of Moses had been forgotten altogether in Judah. But God grants the young king a tender heart to seek after God, purge the land of wickedness, and recover the Law - calling the people back to the singular worship of Yahweh and His covenant with them.

Esther: The Hidden Hand of God

Esther 1-10

In no book of the Bible is it more obvious that God is the hero of the Old Testament than in the book of Esther. Without one mention of the name of God, He is far from absent. His behind-the-scene orchestration of the events build confidence to every believing reader that God's plans cannot be thwarted. The lesson through the life of Esther is not is God at work, but in His working out of His plans will we hide from Him, or stand up for Him?

Moses: Intimacy with God

Exodus 33:1-34:9

Of all the beings in the universe, only God is perfect. Only God is good, through and through, infinitely. So, it is true only of God that the more you know of Him, the better and better He becomes to you. Moses understood this, and we can learn a valuable lesson from a defining moment in his life.

Abraham: He Believed God...

Genesis 12-22

The story of Abraham has two strands running through the entire narrative: Abraham's faith and God's amazing faithfulness. From the time that God called Abram out of Ur and gave him great promises, Abram believed God and obediently lived out his faith. Often struggling to believe, Abraham always put his trust in God in the end. God faithfully provided the promised seed to Abraham…the seed from which the Messiah would come and one day rescue God's people and rebuild His kingdom.

Deborah and Barak: Awakened for Action!

Judges 4 and 5

During a desperate time in Israel, God awakened Deborah and Barak to see that the only way the nation could escape the stifling tyranny of the Canaanite King Jabin was to meet his superior forces in battle. On the surface, it appeared to be a substantial mismatch... but only if the power of God was left out of consideration. Instead, God not only motivated Deborah and Barak to attempt the impossible, He raised up the people to fight, and opened up the heavens to pour out the rain, and the battle was won. Every time we read about a Judge/Deliverer we remember that our deliverance was accomplished only as God sent His Son/Deliverer to appease God's wrath, overcoming the forces of sin that held us fast.

Joseph: God's Plan Is Always Best

Genesis 37-50

The story of Joseph has been told and re-told for thousands of years in literature, and on the stage. This is only natural as it combines all of the elements of great drama. But the core truth of the life of Joseph is that forgiveness and mercy are a more powerful force than are jealousy and treachery. This story still resonates in our hearts today because we continue to live in a world where selfishness and revenge are prevalent.

Saul: Because I Feared the People

1 Samuel 9-13

Saul, the first king of the nation of Israel, is a great example in Old Testament history of a man who sought to perform for God without listening to His voice and responding in obedience. The people wanted a king just like the other nations, and that is just what they got. A man, with physical stature and a handsome appearance, but caught in the trap of fearing man over fearing God. His life reminds us that even when life starts to unravel; obeying the voice of the Lord is always the best plan of action.

1 Kings 16 - 2 Kings 2

Elijah, one of the greatest men of the Old Testament era, was privileged to accomplish great and miraculous things for God. Yet, his times of discouragement remind us that James was right to describe him as having "a nature like ours" (5:17). The life of Elijah reminds us that God wants to do extraordinary things through ordinary people, but only as they determine to do all they can with all they are!

Jesus, the Prophet

Luke 13:31-35

With this final section of chapter 13, Luke reaches a turning point in telling the story of Jesus as prophet, declaring that His mission will not be derailed by the opposition of His enemies (Herod), the hatred of Israel's spiritual leaders (Pharisees), nor even wholesale rejection by the nation itself (symbolized by Jerusalem). And the wonderful irony is that the centerpiece of that mission - the Cross - will become the foundation of forgiveness for those who hated and rejected Messiah.

Caustic Casual

Luke 13:22-30

In this passage, Jesus shows that the ever-expanding kingdom will spread not by physical heritage, but by spiritual heritage. It will be seen that many of the Jews have never truly been a part of the kingdom of God, and that likewise, many Gentiles will be a part of that kingdom. In this lesson, Jesus explains that the distinguishing mark between those who will be a part of God's kingdom and those who won't, will be in how they have sought after the very narrow door of salvation.

In loosening her bonds he demonstrates himself to be the glorious one and ensures that there will be a reckoning for hypocrites who place their religiousity over untying people in bondage.
Missional Stewardship #4: A Simple Strategy for Missional Living

Luke 12:49-59

Why does Jesus stress this topic of faithful stewardship? Why must we make fueling the mission of Christ a life-long priority? The simple, haunting truth is that many around us everyday, while aware of their brokenness, are unaware both of the cure for it, and of the coming judgment before the court of heaven. But there is good news! Through His church, Jesus Christ is spreading the message of rescue, transformation, and forgiveness. It is our great privilege to be part of that rescue effort, using all we are and have to fuel the mission of Christ.

Jesus was clear: Beware of greed in all of its forms! One of the forms greed takes is worry. A basic ingredient in the greedy life is the worrisome question: will there be enough for me? The answer to worry is to overwhelm it with contentment, trusting in the presence and promises of our loving heavenly Father.

That is, we'll hear His perspective on the responsibility we have from God to use all He has given us to "confess" Christ before a watching world. We'll focus on our time, our skills, and our money, but our accountability really includes everything about us, since it is God who gives us the very air we breathe.

Why I Am A Christian

In the past months many have dogmatically declared that allegiance to Jesus Christ as God's Son and our Lord and Savior is wishful thinking at best, and outright conspiracy at worst. So why then, around the world, are growing numbers of real people willing to risk their earthly reputations and well-being, as well as their eternal destiny, on the promise of God that Jesus Christ is all He claims to be?

Jesus' Triumph and Ours

Jesus knew His mission well. As the 'Hosannas' filled His ears on Sunday, He was not swept away with celebrity fame. Nor was he deterred as 'Crucify Him' filled the streets come Friday. He knew the will of the Father was for Him to be received a King and crucified a criminal, so that He might triumph over death and in doing so give His followers a triumph of their own. In our triumph, do we know our mission as well as Jesus?

Hypocrisy and Legalism: Death Masquerading as Life

Luke 11:37-12:3

In this text, Jesus confronts the Pharisees and Scribes who had substituted a man-made system for heartfelt love and pursuit of God. Built on hypocrisy, legalism claims to offer life, but in reality, it leads only to death.

In response to the miracle of vs. 14, some in the crowd demanded further proof of Jesus' Messianic role. In this text Jesus says that no more signs will be given, because they are blind to all that he has already done. They were looking, but not seeing! Jesus turns their request into a warning that is as necessary today as it was then.

Having explained the idea of dependence (5-13) Luke now turns to the issue of the Kingdom of God. Those who benefit from its power must obey its King.

On this third Sunday of Advent, we look at the surprising way in which the lives of Joseph and Mary foreshadowed the way in which their Son - Jesus - would fulfill His divine mission. Both the parents and the Son, when faced with monumental tests and trials, responded righteously in obedience. Through the obedience of the parents, the Savior was born. Through the obedience of the Savior, the world will be saved.

God's King: The Hope of All Creation

Since the first sin in Eden, mankind and all creation has labored in bondage to sin's corruption. Yet, there has always been hope, based on the promise of God to break sin's hold, that all creation would one day be reformed and restored to the place where it could once again, declare fully the glory of God. At Christmas, we celebrate the greatest component in that process. Today we look at Messiah through an Old Testament lens.

Kingdomized Living, Part 1: Loving People

It is clear that, for the disciples, "listening to Jesus" will mean re-evaluating the basic elements of their worldview. What does it mean to follow Jesus, and live "kingdom" lives? How will representatives of the kingdom of God be recognized in this world? The answer begins with understanding that the way Jesus calls us to love people is radically different from our natural inclinations.

Messiah's Mission: Suffering, then Glory

Using two stories, Luke shows his readers just how easy it is to replace Jesus' agenda with our own, and attempt to evade suffering on the road to glory. But, kingdom power only flows when kingdom priorities are maintained. Following Jesus will mean suffering through life in a broken world, always held fast by the promise of heaven's glory.

Following After Jesus

Having seen firsthand that Jesus was a miracle worker, the disciples now affirm that He is "the Christ of God." But, just what will it mean to follow this One? In contrast to the popular view of Messiah and His mission, Jesus declares that His mission will mean His death, and that those who follow Him must willingly have their lives shaped by the cross.

Serving the Food Jesus Provides

The 12 disciples had returned from their first ever missions trip, about which Luke reports nothing. But, on the same day, Jesus demonstrates in a miraculous way just how the work of Gospel ministry is to happen: take who Jesus is and what He provides, and serve it to the people in your world

The First Commission

In chapter 8, the disciples watched and learned as Jesus proclaimed the Kingdom of God and demonstrated His kingdom authority. Now, for the first time, Jesus confers that authority to human ambassadors and sends them out on the very first short-term mission trip!

The Gospel, Part Six

Ephesians 2:10

At the end of the day, having been delivered from bondage to sin and Satan, what can we say about the Believer? And what kind of life should the redeemed one live? And what can provide lasting and joyful motivation to walk in the ways of heaven while being daily confronted with the brokenness of earth? Paul's answer to all of these essential questions acts as a fitting conclusion to this great section of Scripture: we are God's workmanship!

The Gospel, Part Five

Ephesians 2:8,9

In verses 1-7 Paul has given a wonderful overview of the Gospel. Now, in two of the most beloved verses in all of Scripture, Paul carefully traces the process by which the believer is transformed by the love and power of God: through faith!

The Gospel, Part Four

Ephesians 2:1-10

The first three verses paint the tragic picture of mankind's hopeless position under sin. The next three verses dramatically declare the interrupting love and transforming power of God by which those who were dead are given new life, in Christ Jesus. But, as we marvel at God's love and power, we are also driven in amazement to ask…why would God do such a wonderful thing? The way we answer that question will say much about our concept of the Christian life.

The Gospel, Part Three

Ephesians 2:1-10

That God would determine to save those who were by nature both rebellious and corrupt can only be attributed to His great love. Having declared this, Paul next moves on to show that only the power of God could accomplish that which the love of God desired: the re-creation within the sinner of true life! In Christ believers have come to the end of their death!

The Gospel, Part Two

Ephesians 2:1-10

The picture of sinful humanity painted by Paul in verses 1-3 is a radical reminder of just how hopeless and helpless the sinner is unless and until the transforming love of God invades their life, interrupting their alignment with this world and fitting them for heaven.

The Gospel, Part One

Ephesians 2:1-10

In these ten verses the Gospel is as clearly presented as anywhere in the Scriptures. The despair created by the radical reality of verses 1-3 is only surpassed by the amazing joy that rises from Paul's exuberant detailing of God's love and power in salvation – rescuing and reforming by grace those who deserve wrath.
