Can Men and Women Just be Friends?

Can Men and Women Just be Friends?

Scripture: 1 Corinthians 7: 1-7
• What does friendship look like between men and women?
• Friendships are discovered
• Friendships are about something
• Friendship is more than two
• True friendship is based on “appreciation-love” not “need-love.”
Wholesome opposite-sex friendships have these elements
• You watch your body language
• You have clear boundaries
• You assume a clear posture
• You know when to be open and when to be private
• You know how to enjoy clean fun
Sever ungodly soul ties.
Lord sever the ungodly soul tie between me and ______________.
I confess it as sin and I repent before you oh God. Forgive me for the
hurt I have caused to those who have put their love and trust in me.
Restore the broken or torn portions of my soul. Lord, remove anything
that has come into me through this soul tie and, Lord bring back
anything godly that has been stolen from me.

Nurture-The Need of Every Child

Nurture-The Need of Every Child

Where does a child get its primary concept of God?

“Let your light so shine before men, (your children) that they may see your good works and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” (Matthew 5:16)

God is as seen in father and mother.

We have about 12 years to build a bridge to the heart of our child.

Ephesians 1:1-11

1. They need to feel blessed for who they are (vv. 3)

2. They need to feel chosen every day (vv. 4)

3. They need to know they belong to an earthly family along with a special adoption into a heavenly family. (vv. 5)

4. They need to know they are accepted (vv. 6)

5. They need to experience the riches of grace – forgiveness (vv. 7)

6. They need to know they will always be your son and daughter and be part of your God honoring heritage. (vv. 11)

Make your home a place where these concepts are part of your daily conversation

Deuteronomy 6:4-9

1. Parents need to be healthy in their own response to God. (vv. 4, 5)

2. More powerful concepts are caught from the parents heart than taught from their head (vv. 6, 7)

            When sitting at home

            While going on a walk

            When putting them to bed

When getting them up in the morning

3. Recognize the power of visual messages (vv. 8, 9)

            House decorations

            Symbols and family traditions

The Freedom of Discipline

The Freedom of Discipline

Putting Costly Love into Action

Galatians Chapter 6

What do spiritual people do when someone has been overtaken by sin?

1. Our goal is always restoration. (Verse 1)

2. Our attitude is to restore such a person in the spirit of meekness (gently). (Verse 1)

3. Our personal responsibility is to examine ourselves because we also will be tempted before the day is over. (Verse 1 & 4)

4. Our church responsibility is help carry each other’s burdens that result from sin. (Verse 2)

5. We are warned against the most serious spiritual danger of all, the self-delusion of pride that results in deception. (Verse 3,4)

6. Each one of us in this restoration process is also asked to carry our own share of the responsibility. (Verse 5)

7. We have the powerful law of God working on our behalf-the law of sowing and reaping. (Verse 7)

Common objections to the practice of church discipline:

1. People will simply leave the church and go to another church if they are confronted.

2. Western individualism will not accept this kind of accountability-they will accuse us of being judgmental and legalistic.

3. It takes too much time, and in a large congregation there is no way we can follow up on all the people.

4. Teaching and practicing church discipline is inconsistent with our emphasis on grace and the love of God.

5. Spirit-inspired preaching of the Scripture will by itself produce holy congregations. It’s the Holy Spirits job we just sow the seed!

Lesson 101 about discipline from the church in Corinth

1 Corinthians Chapter 5

1. Once you know it you have a responsibility (Verse 1)

2. Christ followers mourn over sinful consequences (Verse 2)

3. Call a church family meeting (Verse 3)

4. Recognize the presence of the Holy Spirit and the power of Jesus in the meeting. (Verse 4)

5. In the name of Jesus deliver the unrepentant up to reap the painful consequences of their sin-so they might be restored to Christ and His church (Verse 5)

6. The purity of Christ’s bride needs to be preserved (Verse 6-8)

7. If you go on fellowshipping with someone living in sin you become a partaker with them in their sin. (Verse 10, 11)

8. Six sinful addictive patterns that you are to be aware of :

sexually immoral b. covetous c. idolater

                  d. reviler e. drunkard f. extortioner

For Godly sorrow produces repentance that gets to the root issue and leaves no regret; but the sorrow of the world produces death. (2 Cor. 7:10)

                     Worldly Sorrow Godly sorrow

Person in Your self God and others

primary focus

Attitudes or Damage done to

actions in Past misdeeds others and our future

primary focus correct deeds

Attitude toward Anger and Love and respect

self frustration combined with concern

Result External change, Repentance and change

Lingering guilt, based on an attitude

Continued struggles of love and mutual

                         and rebellion respect

Confession-means to agree with God about your sin

The church is given the weighty responsibility of “binding and loosing sin” and “forgiving and retaining” sin. (Mathew 18:18; John 20:21)

FREEDOM-From Peer Pressure

FREEDOM-From Peer Pressure
Scripture: Galatians chapter two
Two background stories as told by Paul:
•	Paul’s team (Barnabas & Titus) met with the apostolic leaders in Jerusalem at the home church. (Verses 1-10)
•	Bringing correction to the new outreach church at Antioch (Verses 11-14)
What can we learn about peer pressure from this scripture?
•	Giving into the pressure of our peers exposes the fears in our heart (Verse 12)
•	Giving into the pressure of our peers is a form of hypocrisy (Verse 13)
•	Giving into the pressure of our peers is triangulation at its worst. (Verse 4, 12)
•	Giving into the pressure of our peers has devastating consequences (Verses 13, 14)
What is the redemptive response to a spiritual leader who has sold out because of the pressure of peers?
•	Storm the gates of their heart with a face-to-face encounter.
(Verse 11)
•	If that doesn’t work confront them before all (Verse 14)
What is the difference between showing deference, doing something for expediency sake, showing conciliation or giving into peer pressure?
•	Showing deference is about representing Jesus well-giving into peer pressure is all about us.
•	What is being sacrificed for expediency’s sake?
•	Paul says he did not yield to them so that the truth of the gospel might continue in you.
•	Doing something for expediency sake at the price of an important conviction erodes our spiritual power, our credibility, and the integrity of our witness

FREEDOM…Rescued from this Present Evil

FREEDOM…Rescued from this Present Evil
Scripture: Galatians Chapter One
The Easter Message ”Paul an apostle…by Jesus Christ and God the Father, who raised Him from the dead…who gave Himself for our sins to rescue us from the present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father, to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.” (Verse 1-5)
What is the evidence the church has bought into this present evil age?
•	People are surprisingly quick to desert their faith. (Verse 6)
•	People are easily thrown into confusion. (Verse 7)
•	People become deceived and gullible. (Verse 8, 9)
•	Pleasing people and winning approval becomes more important than serving Christ. (Verses 10)
What is the gospel message for this present evil age?
•	Believing moral absolutes come from God. (Verse 11- 12)
•	Believing we are called by God and commissioned with authority. (Verse 1, 15, 16)
•	Knowing that authentic is rooted in biblical revelation. (Verse 17-20)
•	By our personal testimony of transformation:
•	“The man who formerly persecuted us is now preaching the faith he once tried to destroy.” (Verse 21-24)
•	“And they glorified God because of me!”

Do I March or Do I Stay

“Do I March or Do I Stay?”

Scripture: Isaiah 40:12-31

God cares about the fears of His people. They are being asked to leave Babylon and head home after being there for 70 years. Their parents who remembered the homeland have all died. It’s a 700-mile march through treacherous terrain while only taking the possessions that could be carried on their back, all on the basis of a prophet’s word…this was a risk that provoked thoughts of fear!

The key question leading to effective decision-making is to ask, “What would I decide if I weren’t afraid?” It is astounding to me that the most awesome descriptions of God in the entire Bible are shared to help His people deal with their fears.

How big is God compared to all the nations? (Verses 12-17)

How big is God compared to images we build? (Verses 18-20)

How big is God compared to world rulers? (Verses 21-24)

How big is God in relation to His universe? (Verses 25-26)

How big is God in relation to you? Does He care for you personally? (Verses 27-31)

Exhausted, But Still in Pursuit

Ephesians 6:13-18 (New International Version)

13Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. 18And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints.

How do you Really Know the Will of God?

How do you Really Know the Will of God?

Scripture: Romans 12:1, 2

Every Christ follower faces decisions. Rarely do we get through an entire day without being confronted with many different choices-most of them minor, some of them major. Is there any guarantee that we can consistently do the right thing? The Bible is filled with practical suggestions for making good choices. The message this morning is to encourage you in words of the prophet Isaiah, “This is the way, walk ye in it” (Isaiah 30:21)

You need to know the game plan (Ephesians 2:8-10)

So what color socks should I wear today? (Psalm 121:8; 139:1-5)

This is what you do to know the will of God (Romans 12:1, 2)

Take your everyday ordinary life - how you dress, your health, sleeping, eating, going to work or school, or a stay at home mom, and place it before the Lord as an offering

Focus on Gods presence day and night as an act of worship

Don’t let the culture press you into its mold

“Be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” This is being changed from the inside-out

This process will guarantee you to know what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

The Indescribable Jesus Christ

The Indescribable Jesus Christ

Scripture: 2 Corinthians 9:6-15

If you had the privilege of introducing Jesus Christ in this morning’s service what would you say? (Verse 15)

If someone was looking for Jesus in our town, how would you

describe Him, so He could be found?

A Man going around town sowing kingdom seed generously (Verse 6)

A Man guided by His heart in being generous (Verse 7)

A Man giving cheerfully (Verse 7)

A Man able to extend grace toward any person’s need at

anytime and at any place. (Verse 8-11)

How would you describe His followers?

You would see the people that are hanging out with Him being generous. (Verse 11b)

Because of their generosity, the world sits up and takes notice. (Verse 12-14)

FORGIVENESS: Is Total Forgiveness Realistic?

FORGIVENESS: Is Total Forgiveness Realistic?

Scriptures: Ephesians 4:29-32 Luke 7:44-48

What does forgiveness mean?

Forgive is translated from a Greek word meaning “be gracious” but has a much broader concept to extend grace to others as God has extended grace to us.

What does forgiveness not mean?

            It does not..

Deny the evil that was done

Excuse sinful behavior or remove the consequences

Pretend it never happened or you weren’t wronged

Glossing over the pain you suffered

How do I know when I have truly forgiven?

You no longer think about it day and night

You no longer have to talk about it all the time

You no longer feel the need to seek revenge

You no longer live in bitterness and anger

You can recall those who hurt you and can wish them well

Making the four promises of forgiveness

“I will not dwell on this incident.”

“I will not bring up this incident again and use it against you.”

“I will not talk to others about this incident.”

“I will not let this incident stand between us or hinder our personal

relationship.” (In a few cases this would be unwise)

What does it mean to forgive like Jesus? (Luke 7:44-48)

     You cannot do it alone

     Forgiveness is a gift.

Forgiveness is a response of the heart, not feelings

Forgiveness and love are always connected

Understanding the Nature of God’s Forgiveness?

Understanding the Nature of God’s Forgiveness?

Scripture: Matthew 18: 21-35

The big question on Peter’s heart that needs an answer!

How often shall I forgive my brother who sins against me?

Peter suggested the answer, “Seven times?”

Jesus answers, No! “Seventy times seven.” 490 times

The story, “The Kingdom of heaven is like…” sets this parable in the context of Divine grace

1. The huge debt of our sin could never be repaid (Verse 24, 25)

2. This story is for those of us who are blind to our own sins

3. This story is for anybody finding it hard to forgive

4. Forgiveness always costs the innocent one, for he (the king) forgives the debt out of love and compassion. (Verse 26, 27)

5. The forgiven servant failed to embrace the principle of grace. (Verse 33-34)

a. He was very aggressive in going after a small debt because he was covering up a far bigger debt.

b. He didn’t receive the king’s love and forgiveness in his heart so he couldn’t pass it on

c. Everybody could see his blatant injustice except he, himself

d. At the end of day he was not free – but experienced endless torture

6. This story provides us with a strong motivation to forgive (Verse 35)

Psalm 18

Psalm 18

A Psalm of David The Servant of the Lord, Who Spoke to the Lord The Words of This Song on the Day that the Lord Delivered Him from the Hand of All His Enemies and from the Hand of Saul.

1 And He Said: I will love You, O Lord, my strength.

2 The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer; My God, my strength, in whom I will trust; My shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.

3 I will call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised; So shall I be saved from my enemies.

4 The pangs of death surrounded me, And the floods of ungodliness made me afraid.

5 The sorrows of Sheol surrounded me; The snares of death confronted me.

6 In my distress I called upon the Lord, And cried out to my God; He heard my voice from His temple, And my cry came before Him, even to His ears.

46 The Lord lives! Blessed be my Rock! Let the God of my salvation be exalted.

Healing the Wounded Spirit

Healing the Wounded Spirit

Scripture: Luke 17:1-7

A person’s spirit will sustain him in sickness; but a wounded spirit who can bear it. (Proverbs 18:14)

How do we get wounded?

   1. From those who sin against us
   2. From our own personal sins
   3. From traumatic incidents
   4. From unhealthy responses to people and situations we have misinterpreted – just because we got hurt does not prove that someone has wronged us

Why is this an important issue?

    * Because wounded soldiers cannot go into battle
    * Because bitterness is long-held unforgiveness about a wound we received, and unforgiveness hinders prayer (Luke 11;4
    * Because hurting people hurt other people and it gets passed on.

How do you pray for the healing of wounds? (Luke 17:6, 7)

    * You can start with a speck of faith like a grain of mustard seed
    * Speak to the mulberry tree with its massive root system –remove it (Vs. 6)
    * Uprooting a wound will “hurt to heal”
    * Keep speaking God’s WORD over the wound – God will bring the healing

The words of Jesus to the wounded

    * “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds” (Ps.147:3)
    * “By His wounds we are healed.” (Is. 53:5)
    * “He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted and set the oppressed free.” (Luke 4:18

Invite Jesus to minister to your wounds

    * “A bruised reed He will not break”
    * “A flickering wick He will not snuff out.” (Matt. 12:20)

Where is God in Times of Crisis?

Where is God in Times of Crisis?

Scripture: Geneses 16

What created this crisis between Abram, Sarai and Hagar?

Impatience with God
Jealousy
Abram’s lack of leadership in his marriage
Sarai so mistreated Hagar that she fled

Two questions to ask when running from a crisis. (Verse 8)

How did I get here?
Where am I going?

Two necessary responses when running from a crisis (Verse 9)

Go back and face the situation
Go with the promise God gave you

Encountering God in times of crisis (Verse 13, 14)

Hagar, “You are the God who sees me.”
Hagar, “I have now seen the One who sees me.”
Give it a name to remember the experience. “Beer Lahai Roi”

It’s Time To Be Humble

Living With No Regrets
It’s Time To Be Humble

Learn from your losses

The Lord turned and looked straight at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word the Lord had spoken to him: “Before the rooster crows today, you will disown me three times.” And he went outside and wept bitterly. (Luke 22:61, 62)

Take responsibility for your failures

“A person who refuses to admit his sins can never be successful. But if he confesses and forsakes them, he discovers God’s mercy.” (Proverbs 28:13)

Get complete release from your guilt

“But go, tell his disciples and Peter, “He is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him just as he told you.” (Mark 16:7)

All champions in the bible:
1. Sensed a call
2. Hit the wall
3. Had a fall (on their knees)
4. Rose up and stood tall

“Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God. They are brought to their knees and fall, but we rise up and stand firm. (Psalm 20: 7, 8)

Love Completely

Living with No Regrets

Love Completely

John 15: 9-17

The defining question: “If you knew you had one month to live how would you live it?” Relationships really matter!

Five regrets to loving relationships:

1. The regret of a “Me first” life pattern
2. The regret of disloyalty
3. The regret of destructive communication
4. The regret of trying to change others by control
5. The regret of not forgiving or asking for forgiveness

The four greatest biblical principles in learning how to love completely

   1. Jesus calls for sacrifice and commitment (verse 13)
   2. Learn how to be faithful and loyal (verse 14)
   3. Develop loving, honest and transparent communication (verse 15)
   4. Unconditional love the key for change (verse 16)

Who Gets To Go?

Rev 7:9-10: 9 After these things I looked, and behold, a great multitude which no one could number, of all nations, tribes, peoples, and tongues, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, with palm branches in their hands, 10 and crying out with a loud voice, saying, “Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!”

Matt. 5:21-24: 21 “You have heard that it was said to those of old, ‘You shall not murder, and whoever murders will be in danger of the judgment.’ 22 But I say to you that whoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment. And whoever says to his brother, ‘Raca!’ shall be in danger of the council. But whoever says, ‘You fool!’ shall be in danger of hell fire. 23 Therefore if you bring your gift to the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you, 24 leave your gift there before the altar, and go your way...

Live Passionately

“Living with No Regrets”
Live Passionately
Luke 5:18-26

When you think about it, we don’t have control over many things in life. We didn’t get to decide where we were born, who are parents are, or which time period or culture we live in. We don’t get to decide the dates on our gravestone. Only God knows when out time is up on this earth. It could be next week or next year or decades away. But there is one thing we have a vast amount of control over. We get to decide how we are going to live today!

“So love the Lord God with all your passion and prayer and intelligence and energy.” Mark 12:30 (Msg)

“Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord.” Rom. 12:11 (NIV)

1. Step out of the routine and do something drastic (verse 18)
      Realize its do or die!

2. Push back when meeting the unexpected (verse 19)
Miracles seem more frequent beyond the point of our normal response.

3. Create space for God where there seems to be no space (verse 19)

4. Accept the grace He extends to you (verse 20)

5. Keep a reminder of the remarkable things you see each day. (Verse 24-26)
