Or,
How do I follow Jesus in my work?
Colossians 3:22--4:1

Because you are Christ’s, your work in the marketplace is work for Him, rewarded by Him. We serve Him as we serve others, when we work “as for the Lord.”

Relationships in Christ, 1
Or,
How do I follow Jesus in my home?
Colossians 3:18-21

Because you are God’s people in Christ, your homes must reflect His will for you in the orderly, respectful way you relate to one another.

The first applications of “putting off the old,” and “putting on the new” (3:1-17), are those of family. Without the proper order, no home can hope either to glorify God or foster discipleship.

Separate yourself from your pre-Christ life(style). Colossians 3:5-11

Since you have Christ’s new life, don’t be guilty of the immorality, greed, anger, and lying which characterize the old life. Instead, live out your new identity as part of God’s New Creation, a community of unity, not self-centeredness.

Colossians_Week 7: Danger:Beware of Missing Jesus by Misunderstanding Him

Danger: Beware of Missing Jesus by Misunderstanding Him
                                Colossians 2:8-15
Someone says there are spiritual things greater than Christ and His blessings? Impossible! Jesus Christ is God incarnate, and you are already complete in Him, filled by having the New Covenant, life, forgiveness, liberty, and victory over every spirit.

Just why is Jesus “the only Way”?

Beware of any teachings that draw your eyes away from Jesus. v. 8
Why? For two of the very best and highest reasons:

1. God’s fullness is in Him, which leaves no room for improvement. v. 9 And,

2. You are complete (full) in Him, Ruler of all powers in the cosmos. v. 10

You wonder how He rules, and what it means to be “complete in Him”?

Because Jesus’ work on the cross for us was infinite in power. . .

 	1. We have the promises / signs of the New Covenant. (11, 12a)

	2. We have new life. (12b-13b)

	3. We have forgiveness of all of our sins. (13c)

		4. We have liberty from the debt we owed any “Law.” (14)

	5. We have no fear of any other powers in the world. (15)

So. . .	Why go back to an Old Covenant displaced by the New?
Why seek for life when you already have died and risen again?
Why hope for a forgiveness you already have obtained?
Why pursue the “rules” of a Law that has been deposed?
Why worship defeated spirits who have no power over you?

In short, why be captive to an empty religion of the traditions of men,
when you already are free in the fullness of the revelation of Christ?

* * * * * * * * *
1. Are you content with Christ and His provision, or are you still seeking completeness in other things, gods,
or religions?

Once we understand that Jesus is the fullness of God and we are complete in Him, we no longer search for alternative religions and spiritual experiences. There is nothing we can do to add to the work of Christ. Conversely, if you are still seeking, it is likely that you have not yet come to acknowledge Him in His fullness or appreciate all He purchased for His people on the Cross. Once we find what is lost, we stop searching; once we are filled, our hunger ends. Isaiah 55:1-3; John 4:13, 14; 7:37-39; Ephesians 1:3, 18-23.

2. Are you taking responsibility for your spiritual life in learning the fullness of Christ and thereby choosing
to resist false teaching?

We always must be on guard against heresy and deception. How? Not by studying the cults or world religions, but by getting to know, really know Christ. By obeying Him in baptism. By studying His word. By participating in the body-life of a New Testament church. By guarding what we read, watch and hear which appears to be Christian. No one knows doctrine by intuition. Rather, God has provided means to learn and become established in the faith. Matthew 28:18-20; 1 Timothy 3:15; Eph. 4:11-16.

3. Are you resting in the joy of sins forgiven?

When you are truly believing in Jesus, what happens to your sins?

They are abundantly pardoned through Jesus at God’s pleasure. Is. 53:5-11; 55:7-9.
They are taken away, and you are released from them. John 1:29; Rev.1:5.
They are as far from you as east is from west. Psalm 103:12.
They are buried in the sea by God who delights to love you. Micah 7:18,19.
They are “forgotten” by God. Hebrews 10:17.
They are covered by Christ’s blood, which clears the conscience. Heb. 9:14.
They will never, ever condemn you. Romans 8:1, 33, 34.

Colossians_Week 5: The Goal of Ministry: Completeness in Christ

The Goal of Ministry: Completeness in Christ
Colossians 1:13-23
Christ is the complete plan of God! Finding satisfaction in God’s long-hidden purpose (revealed now as Jesus Christ) enables us to rejoice in any sacrifice when it helps others also find completeness in Him.

Can Jesus really make me happy?

This remarkable text presents some seemingly unlikely pairs. . .
	Present suffering with ultimate joy.
Christ’s ministry and purpose with our own.
	Individuals with a Collective Body.
	Mystery with revelation.
Weakness with strength (man and God).

But these paradoxes are not rare: Acts 14:19-23; 2 Cor. 1:6; 4:1-18; Eph. 3:1-13; Phil. 1:12-20; 1 Thess. 3:1-7; Heb. 12:1-11; 1 Pet. 3-5.

Paul rejoices in suffering in order to fulfill Christ’s purpose. . .

Because God’s special gift of ministry to him was to make known what was previously hidden. . .
That is, that Christ’s indwelling presence, even in these formerly pagan Gentiles,
Is the very hope of man spending eternity in the glories of God’s presence,
The happiest of all possible ends, goals or ambitions.

Why does Paul need to explain this? Because his readers (and we). . .
--Recoil at the prospect of being inconvenienced, let alone suffering.
(Paul says that God’s purposes are achieved through suffering.)

--Can be so deceived by Satan, trained by their culture, and tempted by their humanity (flesh) that they tend to see their own
happiness as being in opposition to others’ happiness.
(Paul says God’s purposes are fulfilled in a BODY, not a mob of disjointed individuals.)

--Can be so into the human present that they are unaware of the divine past.
(Paul says God revealed a plan for the history of man.)

--Can be so easily distracted by the present world that they forget about the next.
(Paul says God’s future is the context for our present.)

--Can be so consumed by pursuing pleasures and avoiding pain that they learn to settle for second rate joys.
(Paul says that the goal most worthy of pursuit is the prospect of being complete in Christ.)

--Can be so taken with their own accomplishments, they become prideful.
(Paul says that true ministry is done through God-glorifying grace.)

The implications: three questions on how you “see” things.

1. What is your vision of Jesus Christ?

Do you see Jesus as an important person, or the central figure of history and eternity? Are His goals your goals? Are His purposes your purposes? Is Christ in you your hope of glory? John 14:6-9.

2. What is your vision of yourself?

Is your ultimate purpose to avoid suffering, or to glorify God by being perfected by and in Christ? Philippians 3:7-11.

3. What is your vision of ministry?

Is your life lived to avoid pain or to risk pain for others so they may know the fullness of God in Christ?
Are you asking God to use you where you are for His purposes in His Body, the Church? Ephesians 4:11-16.
