High Hopes: For What?

As we begin another Advent season, once again you are invited to repentance. This could mean an about-face, taking a posture of yielded openness to God.

Does God feel hidden from you? Do you yearn to live in God's truth? Or, would you rather remain at a distance? There is a saying, "Aim for the wrong target, and likely you'll hit it." Deep in your heart, what are you really hoping for?

Additional texts important to this message include Isaiah 64:1-9 and 1 Corinthians 1:3-9.

An Expanding Fullness--The Blessings and Uses of Wealth

God's abundance is meant to be enjoyed, increased, and invested so that the Kingdom of God might thrive. So how are you (and we) managing our "portfolio" of God's blessings?

Soccer Moms and the Ends of the Earth

No one wants to be lonely. Connections are one of the real benefits of the Christian life. But how do we make connections so that we are truly a "body," when our lives take us in such scattered directions?

Beyond Forgiveness: The Ministry of Reconciliation

We are encouraged to go beyond ourselves and seek reconciliation with those who have harmed us. Reconciliation is very much a bibilical concept. Our weekly worship bulletin is also available on the website; the November 2, 2008 bulletin includes an insert for a time of guided prayer as you might seek to begin, or continue, the process of forgiving someone who has harmed you in the past.

It's All About the Edges

This is an "odds and ends" sermon re forgiveness. What about cases of abuse? Shunning? Trust? Unrepentant attitudes? My unmanageable emotions? These are real life applications which make forgiveness a challenge.

The Heart of the Matter

Forgiveness is not one-time, simplistic work. For us, it is different than it is for God (one time, and it's over). This week we'll get into the vexing topic of forgetting vs. forgiving.

The Emotions of Forgiveness

The sermon reflects widely on how differently we are wired, resisting the "one size fits all" notion that we should all feel wretched, with corresponding "Amazing Grace" at how joyously forgiven we are. Such thinking sets people up for even more guilt, especially if their inner emotional process is one of fairly high self esteem from the beginning. Each person should think about his or her own emotional process which they "bring to the altar," and then carry it into the real world of forgiving others.

Forgiveness That Matters

This sermon is actually an introduction for a later series on forgiveness, which will be preached this fall. In particular, the focus is on how specific biblical instructions can come to be a part of our very culture as a congregation, and as individuals. The sermon texts include Jesus' words as he taught his disciples to pray in Matthew 6:9-14.

Your Life Is a Gift

Wisdom does not consist of learning or of intelligence, but of the cumulative response to life's adversities. As Paul so clearly indicates in the first few verses of 2 Corinthians, God comforts us in our troubles so that we in turn can learn to comfort others.
