The Story of Christmas is the Story of a New Birth

Third week in Advent. We light the Shepherds candle or faith. We remember, we celebrate the coming of God himself into his broken world to set things right. With the coming of Christ is the coming of a new creation, new birth, and a new community.

Jesus, the eternal Word who created all things came near to recreate you. He does this through the “shine” display of his goodness and glory.

The thing about the light of life that comes in Christ is that it forces and response that determines your relationship.

The Story of Christmas is the Story of a New Creation

Christmas celebrates the coming of God himself into his broken world to set things right. With the coming of Christ is the coming of a new creation, a new birth, and a new covenant community.

God Himself, who created all things, has come to recreate your world.

This is how John begins the story that ends with, “believe and have life in his name.” The whole point is that you would believe...and if you believe, that you'd now see yourself as a new creation. This is worth celebrating. Merry Christmas!

The story of Christmas in its context

The four weeks of Advent call us to remember the darkness of sin and shame and to celebrate the coming of Christ who is the light. Jesus is the hero of the Christmas story.

Christmas has a context.

Christmas is a powerful invasion of all that is, it is a deadly, revolutionary, rescue of lost sinners. Christmas celebrates the coming of God himself into his broken world to set things right. With the coming of Christ is the coming of a new creation, a new birth, and a new covenant community.

I love to tell the Story...and Jesus is the hero

We spiritualize Lazarus into happy story. No! It is a “for the joy set before Him” story. Its a glory on the other side of suffering story. Have you noticed that this is a great story? Hero, villains, conflict, death and redemption.

This is what the story of Laz is about. Its a story of hope. The hope looks like this.
If Jesus can so easily raise Lazarus, then he can raise himself.
If Jesus can raise himself, then he can raise you and me.

Who is the hero of our story? JESUS is the hero of our story.

I Love to Tell the Story...if you believe, you will see the glory of God

Jesus raises Lazarus so that people may believe that God sent Him as a sign of God's glory that would lure rebels into reconciled relationship. His ultimate display is His own death on the cross, where love and justice meet.

The story of Lazarus is much bigger than Lazarus. It is a sign pointing out that Jesus is a treasure better than all other treasures and through Him you can know life as God intended life to be.

Be part of the story that is much bigger that yourself, than Santa Margarita Community Church – and this will be a sign to our community that Jesus is a great savior.

I Love to Tell the Story...of how our "if only" makes Jesus angry

Circumstances preach to Martha and Mary that God does is not active and does not care, so they get angry and question Jesus.

Jesus enters into the grief of his dear friends in order to guide them to glory. He cares for them uniquely and their “if onlys” arouse his anger.

From their suffering, we are reminded that God has acted in Jesus and has loved us in Jesus.

I Love to Tell the Story...of how Jesus' glory is for gladness

I live in the real world and my faith must also. The plastic faith of Jesus trinkets and bad Christian movies makes me angry. Making Jesus to serve our interest, as we talked about last week, does not come anywhere near to the life that I actually live. I don't know if you've noticed, but actual relationships don't fit into 5 steps – or 40 love dares, whatever is the fad today. It just doesn't work that way and Jesus never works that way.

Jesus is intent on showing us that glory at all costs. Because He loves me he wants me to believe through seeing a display of glory. He is glad when suffering allows me to believe.

Lazarus is an example of God's nearness and very particular governance of the worst we can imagine in this world. He loves us so much He will providentially guides us into and through suffering so that we might see His glory and believe – this will make both him and us glad.

I Love to Tell the Story...of how Jesus works for His Father

Jesus is once again in the temple. This time during the Feast of Dedication, Hanukkah, which celebrated the great deliverance of Israel under Judas Maccabees in B.C. 165. The people surround him and ask directly, “If you are the new deliverer, tell us.”

Is that just like us, trying to corner Jesus to work for our ends, to help our team win? What a sad, pathetic little God we would have if He served us. Jesus works for His Father...and that is the best thing that could ever happen to us.

I love to Tell the Story...of how Jesus leads like Jesus

We see Jesus step in here as God in human form to take the mess of humanity by the hand and lead them to the path to joy and purpose in the Father.

Jesus leads like Jesus...what else can we say that would be better than that? Jesus leads like Jesus in in such a way that brings glory to the Father through our broken lives.

I love to Tell the Story...of how Jesus brings freedom to this life

Following Jesus brings light and life, at least theoretically. Far too often our lives are just as bound up as the next person. We have the same goals, struggle with the same issues, carry the same burdens as our friends who don't know Jesus. We allow our “belief” to settle to the lowest common denominator of church going and some moral behaviors. But that is really a life of bondage and story of self deceit. The true story is that Jesus brings freedom in this life, not slavery.

I Love to Tell the Story...of how Jesus' death brings us life

Ours is a story of life. Life in our story is God. Knowing God in Jesus is truly living. Life is the restoration of the image of God in which we were created. Restoring us to think God's thoughts after Him. To act on God's behalf in God's world and to relate to one another in such a manner that the glory of God is seen more and more clearly in the other.

In this passage, Jesus calls us to follow Him to light of life knowing that the only way that we even have the potential to enjoy life is because of his death.

I Love to Tell the Story...of how Jesus brings light into dark places

As we walk through a central section of the Gospel John we are doing a little character development for our story. The hope is that all that Jesus is will draw our hearts away from lesser things to a whole hearted love for him and send us on our mission into Santa Margarita and the surrounding region to bring light where there is darkness. To take part in the story yourself...come into the light and see what Jesus reveals about yourself, about the Father, about himself.

I Love To Tell The Story

The self-sufficient God of the universe displays His own glory through the creation of the world. But sinful self-sovereigns refuse to recognize Him and bow the knee. God has stepped in to redeem and to reconcile those rebels from the power of sin in order to save them from the eternal destruction which their actions deserve. The church has been tasked to spread the news of the glory of God in order to call the world to repentance and to prepare for His coming reign. This is our story.
