That The Son of Man May Be Lifted Up

"Why did Jesus come?" It's an important question, and many times Jesus told us why. Through December we have been looking at some of the statements Jesus made about his mission.

Last Sunday (28st December) we thought about some more of Jesus' words we don't normally associate with Christmas. In John 12:27, while speaking to the crowds, Jesus said:

...for this purpose I have come to this hour...

What was "this hour"? Of course, Jesus was referring to his coming death. In this sermon we find the purpose of his death in three words: judgement, triumph and attraction.

That They May Have Life

"Why did Jesus come?" It's an important question, and many times Jesus told us why. Through December we have been looking at some of the statements Jesus made about his mission.

In this sermon we think about some more of Jesus' words we don't normally associate with Christmas. In John 10:10b, when Jesus was speaking to some of the Pharisees, he said:

" I came that they may have life and have it abundantly."

What kind of life? Who gets it? How can we know it is true?

To Bear Witness to the Truth

Jesus expresses his reason for being born into the world: to bear witness to the truth. However, truth can be difficult to get hold of, as Pilate's response showed. However, ultimate truth is found in who God is (Father Son and Spirit), and what God is doing in redemption.

So That the Blind May See

The Feast of Tabernacles or Booths marked the incoming of the grape and olive harvests. The feast was full of significance in that is spoke of the great harvest of nations. Part of the ceremony was the illumination of the Temple, illustrating the glory of God in the middle of pagan darkness.

Into this setting comes Jesus saying, "I am the light of the world". In John 9, with the healing of a man born blind he shows he is the light, as he opens not only the man's physical eyes but his spiritual eyes too.

Paradise Lost

The symbols referred to in this passage are important in understanding what we have lost, how we have lost it, and how it is going to be restored. In this sermon we look at
- the Knowledge of Good and Evil
- the Tree of Life
- references to the Tabernacle/Temple

For an Israelite reading or hearing this account it would lead him to believe that though Eden and the Tree of Life was barred, a way is to be made open once again to life.

Consequences of Sin

Temptation is bad enough. Satan invites us to doubt what God has said, to doubt his motives, or to believe that we can be blessed without him.

But once sin has happened, it only gets worse as the weeds of corruption get hold. The picture is pretty bleak. Yet in this midst of all this darkness we find in this passage the hope of the gospel.

Broken Covenant

In the Garden we see a covenant relationship between God and Man with its focal point the commands regarding the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. However, Eve is decieved and Adam with her, so man falls into sin. There are key lessons to learn about how tempatation works.

Sabbath Rest

God rested on the seventh day after the work of creation. This forms the basis for the pattern of weekly sabbath rest found in Scripture. It helps us look forward to the hoped for eternal rest in Christ.
