preparation for the passover

An action – that God took. A ceremony – that the Jews where to repeat. An objection lesson – that everyone was meant to understand.
Two great enduing truths: 1. Substitutionary Atonement 2. The Immorality of the Soul
These two utube clips are used in the sermon:

Wealth

The Big Picture
God created humans to live under him, 'filling and subduing' his creation. They would be his gardeners and carers of his world.
But mankind had a different idea. Autonomy. They wanted to rule the world, fill it, subdue it, but according to their rules.
What did God do? One thing was to 'subject the world to frustration' (Romans 8:20). Rather than being able to subdue the land, produce crops with ease, the land will now fight back (Genesis 3:17). Work becomes toil.
God did this to show us that though we want to be gods, we are not god. He alone rules.

Ecclesiastes
Ecclesiastes fits right into this Biblical story. It is an honest book of 'wisdom' – looking at the world and making helpful observations about how to live well in it.
The writer sees that life is frustrating. He sees that we work and work and someone else gets the fruit. He sees that the good die just as the wicked die – there is injustice. The writer sees that we can't control the world, but it just rattles on, season following season, the sun rising and the sun setting, and our life in the midst of all that is like 'breath' – here one day, gone the next. We try desperately to control the world, but we fail miserably and it ends in frustration and death.
The world screams at us that we are not God. God is God.
So how should we live? The writer tells you to enjoy what God has given you. Enjoy the food, and drink and work that he gives you to enjoy. Thank him for you 'lot in life'. And then you will have a good life. Don't try and control or change what you cannot control and change.

The New Testament
The New Testament points us forward to world without this frustration. Jesus has control over things we cannot control, and one day the world will stop 'groaning' in frustration (Romans 8:18-25) and everything will be made new.
Until then Ecclesiastes speaks into so many areas of life and shows us how to live in this world. It speaks about wealth, work, wisdom, time, injustice, growing old, being young, and of course, death itself. There could not be a more relevant book for us to study in this society of ours.

A New Attitude: Part 2

"Peter's identification of his readers as “exiles of the diaspora”, is biblically rich and theologically significant. He calls them, as Jeremiah had done (Jer 29:7), to so live that the ‘pagans’ around them might find true ‘peace and prosperity’.

The apostle calls for the believers to be a new community that lives out a radical and profoundly disconcerting disengagement/engagement with the world as they look to Christ for both their freedom and example.

Through this pastoral letter, Peter shows the people of God, in whatever cultural context they find themselves in, how to live distinctively and attractively as the people of God.

In terms of her attitude to the world, the church is often caught between timid isolationism and trenchant confrontation. Peter offers a new strategy characterised by humility and boldness; a people who trust Christ to save all those for whom he died."

A New Identity [audio]
