Is baptism a load of rubbish?

The title of this sermon may appear somewhat provocative; our Baptist friends whom we have made endure this morning the so-called "baptism" of an infant may well be thinking to themselves: that's right - infant baptism is a load of rubbish. Now I want to say at the outset of this sermon that despite the fact that I have some bold things to say today, so far as I can see, the overall thrust of what I want to say should not necessarily offend anyone of Baptist convictions. Our subject today is not baptism in itself, rather it is something deeper, something on which I hope all of us will agree.

Dying well

I wonder what your response would be if I were to stand up here & say: "I believe in euthanasia". Would you throw me out? I hope so! However, euthanasia is actually a good word; it just has a bad meaning and very bad practice attached to it. The word is from the Greek and literally means "good death". It is all about dying well. I believe in "dying well". My point is: Why should the devil have all the good words? He's hijacked it for his own evil agenda. But this word belongs to us; only Christians have a good death; only Christians die well. What does this mean? It is well demonstrated for us in the life and death of Jacob.

Corinthian worship - Is it right?

Corinth was not your ideal church. It was a cliquey sort of church; there was a party-spirit of one-upmanship; there was jealousy and quarrelling; they were blase about immorality; they were boastful of their enlightened liberty; they were proud of their spiritual gifts; and they had perverted the Lord's Supper to such an extent that Paul says "this is not the Lord's Supper" - He is not here. This is the church Paul is addressing in this letter. I just want to pick up on one key verse - 1 Cor 14:26. Let's try to work out how God wants us to take this; what He wants us to do with it. Particularly this matter of there being a personal vocal contribution from a number of people in the congregation.

Twelve sons and twelve tribes

Some of you have experienced this already. I haven't, my time is yet to come. Some of you have been called to your parent's bedside, because they are dying. In our text, Jacob is in that bed, he is about to die. He called for his 12 sons and gave a prophetic pronouncement concerning their future for many generations yet to come. These things tend to run in families. What you say, what you do, how you live your life now, is likely to have an effect for your children and children's children, even for generations to come.

A living legacy

I'll start today on a sombre note. Imagine you go to the doctor for a routine check-up; he tells you that you have cancer. What would be your response? Would it send you into a wild panic? Or would you be thanking God for the advance notice? News like this has a way of focussing our mind on the things that really matter. One of my responsibilities as a pastor is to encourage and challenge each of us to think deeply, to reflect on our own life. What legacy will you leave behind? Your life now is a living legacy. What legacy are you living out now? What legacy are you passing on to your children?

O come, all ye faithful

When I did a Google search for "O come, all ye faithful" at the top of the page were versions by Katharine McPhee (runner-up in last years American Idol, and this year rated by People magazine as one of the 100 most beautiful women in the world), and by Twisted Sister (a heavy-metal band who fuse shock tactics, a mood of rebellion and heavy make-up). Apparently these word "O come, all ye faithful..." are out there. People from all walks of life know them and enjoy them. But do they understand them? More to the point, do we understand them?

Into Egypt

Today I want us to take a bird's eye view of the next 11 chapters of Genesis, chapters 37-47. We're looking for the big picture - what is happening here in relation to God’s whole purpose with the human race, His whole scheme of redemption. It seems to me that the big picture here is the idea of "Into Egypt". The first question is: What is Egypt? What does Egypt represent? Is it not the world, the unbelieving world, the world without God, prosperous but without God?

The house of God is home

Crunch time has come for Jacob. It is Bethel or bust! Going where he wanted to go, setting up camp where he wanted to set up camp, was jeopardising not only his own life and his family, but the whole concept of the covenant people of God. The bottom line is that every man needs a spiritual home. Jacob needed a spiritual home. Jacob knew where he belonged, in Bethel, but he was not there. Bethel, the house of God is our spiritual home. It is where we belong. It is where we meet with God, together with His covenant people.

The Godless chapter

Genesis 34 is a unique chapter in all the Bible. Apart from the book of Esther & the Song of Solomon, I am told that it is the only chapter in all the Bible that makes no mention of God. Esther and the Song are full of God - His influence, His gracious providence, a living relationship with Him. But not so with Genesis 34. It is a godless chapter. So why did God put it here in the Bible? I find that intriguing. There must be a good reason. Let's go looking for the gospel in this godless chapter. I believe it is here. It is here by not being here. It is here by showing us the consequences when the gospel is ignored.

Consequences of compromise

Children's stories often end with the words, "and they lived happily ever after." It makes us feel good. We might have expected something like that at the end of Gen 33 with Jacob & Esau wonderfully reconciled. However, we turn the page and find one of the most disappointing chapters in all the Bible. It is full of rape, ransacking, murder and mayhem. And our hero, Jacob, is not the victim, rather he is implicated in it all. Why does this have to be in the Bible? I believe God is giving us a wake-up call about the consequences of compromise...

Blessed correction

"Blessed is the man whom God corrects." Blessed are the children who have parents who seek to correct their children following the pattern God uses for correcting them. In wrapping up this series on Parenting with Promise, I want to suggest to you a very practical 7-step process you may care to implement when you go about correcting your children. It is based on the acronym CORRECT...

Accommodating our children

Some fathers think that if they provide their children with food on the table, a shirt on their backs, and a roof over their heads, then they have done their duty. I am suggesting a very different meaning of the words "accommodating our children". I mean we are to know our children, to know their limitations, to know the differences between them, to know their strengths and particular weaknesses. We are to enter their world...

Jacob the prodigal son

There is a striking similarity between the account of Jacob meeting Esau (as described here in Genesis 33) and our Lord's parable of the prodigal son. In many ways Jacob is like the prodigal son returning home repentant, and yet there are some significant differences as well. Esau is something like the forgiving father in Jesus' parable, and so is a picture of the forgiveness of God Himself. Yet Esau is described in the Bible as godless. We have much to learn here about reconciliation with our brothers.

Affection for our children

Neurologists tell us that when parents show affection to their babies and young children a flood of hormones is released in their brains. These develop pathways and networks in the child's brain, which help them to show affection to others. This is a good reason to show affection to our children, but there is an even better reason. We have the privilege of emulating to our children the affection that God shows to us as His children ...

What's in a name?

Jim Hogg was a lawyer in Texas in the late 19th century. His older brother, Tom, wrote a poem about the civil war in which the heroine was Imogene, or Ima for short. Jim was so taken by the story that when his first daughter was born he named her after the heroine - Ima. When Jim's father-in-law heard what they were calling his grand-daughter he made an emergency visit. However he arrived too late, the "christening" had already taken place. She was named "Ima Hogg." So, what's in a name? There can be quite a lot. So it was for Jacob ...

The unequal wrestle

Imagine that you are alone, walking down a dark alley in the middle of the night, surrounded by shadows, with all sorts of fears crowding in on your mind, not the least being a guilty conscience concerning your brother whom you have defrauded. Suddenly, someone or something knocks you to the ground, and seeks to pin you there under his weight. This is what it was like for Jacob. He was assaulted. Who is it? Is it Esau?

Accountability with our children

Perhaps you have found that children often have a keen sense of justice. If Mum has cooked chips for dinner, children can be very discerning about how many chips are on someone else’s plate as compared to their own. What we parents need to realise is that it is God who has given them this keen sense of justice, and He has given it to them for a reason. It may not be the reason for which they use it, but a keen sense of justice is intrinsically good as a gift of God.

Accepting our children

Should our acceptance of our children be "unconditional"? Should our love for our children be "unconditional"? You might have a yes or no answer already; but I want us to understand why the answer is whatever you think it is. This is a deep issue, a heart issue, it takes us into the very heart of God to find the answer. Our parenting is to be a reflection of God's parenting of us as His children. So first we need to answer the question, Does God accept us "unconditionally"?

Alluring our children

"Alluring" is a word normally used in the Bible to describe the seductiveness of sin. However in Hosea 2:14 God is said to allure His people to Himself. He not only commands us to repent and believe, He entices us with the wonderful attractiveness of the gospel. This is a pattern for us as parents to allure our children, to win their hearts.

When the way forward is backward

Nobody likes going backwards. But Jesus says that sometimes we have to go backwards in life in order to move forward. He says "If you are offering your gift at the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled to your brother; then come and offer your gift." It was like this for Jacob. Before he could go forward into the Promised Land he had to go back and put something right with his brother Esau. Maybe we need to revisit an Esau from our past.

What if God had not been with me?

Have you ever spent some time wondering why you are the person you are? What if you were someone else? Why am I who I am? What makes me me? Is it chance, or is it God? This question is prompted by what seems to me the key verse of our text: v42, "If the God of my father, the God of Abraham and the Fear of Isaac, had not been with me, you would surely have sent me away empty-handed." What if God had not been with me the way He has been...?

Time to go home

As you read this passage, you may well have been thinking: What is going on here? There are deals, counter-deals, broken-deals, breeding sticks, randy sheep and goats, genetic engineering, and dreams. It all makes for an interesting story, but why is it in the Bible? I believe we have here an illustration of our journey of life, and so the application centers around the question: Where are we going?

Heaven: a fool's paradise?

Many people would say that the only paradise that exists is a fool's paradise. By this they mean "a state of happiness based on a false hope." It exists only in the minds of fools. So we have our question tonight: Is heaven just a fool's paradise? I want to start with the answer you were not expecting - yes - heaven is a fool's paradise. However, a fool's paradise is not necessarily what you think it is.

Attributes and attitudes

Do you know the answer to the Westminster Shorter Catechism question: What is God? "God is a Spirit, infinite, eternal and unchangeable, in His being, wisdom, power, holiness, justice, goodness and truth." There are 7 communicable attributes listed here, which lead to 7 corresponding attitudes our Father God has towards us as His children, and which we can seek to emulate in our parenting of our children.

The deep desires of our heart

I must admit that I have never seen the TV show 'Desperate Housewives', and from what I've read about it, I don't think I ever want to. Anyway I don't need to, because there is a better version here in the Bible. Here in our text we have two desperate housewives: Leah and Rachel. One is desperate for love, the other is desperate for children.

Imagine a reflex tennis pole. You hit the ball away from you, then it comes around and hits you in the back of the head. What goes around... comes around!
Jacob meets his maker

199 years ago, Scottish novelist, Sir Walter Scott, wrote these famous words: "Oh what a tangled web we weave, when first we practise to deceive!" I'm sure nearly everyone of us can identify with the truth of those words. Today we walk with Jacob at the very beginning of his encounter with God. He is still very much embroiled in the tangled web of lies and deceit.

The heart of fathers and mothers

I'm sure we all love our children deeply. I love my children as my own soul, but I do not always parent them from my heart. I sometimes fail to exercise my own heart - exercise in the sense of a spiritual sweat and a pounding heart. I often fail to really engage their hearts. Parenting is all about seeking a meeting of hearts. We are aiming for parenting that is from heart to heart.

Worship as God wants it to be

What is "worship as God wants it to be"? Our great danger is to describe worship as we want it to be, and then rename it "worship as God wants it to be". So tonight I take my cue from the text (Heb 12:28-29) where the apostle starts with what God is, and then declares that this must be reflected in our worship of Him.

The heart of our children

Do we desire our children to obey us? Of course we do. God has told them to. God also desires that we obey Him. But how does He do it? By changing our hearts, by ripping out the old heart of unbelief and by giving a new heart of faith, by captivating and winning our hearts. We cannot regenerate our children, we cannot presume that they are regenerate already, but we do need to focus on their hearts.

You've probably all heard the saying "Lord, give me patience, and give it to me now!" It brings a smile to our faces, because we know it is true to life. It seems to me that one of the main principles God wants us to grasp here is to do with patience and impatience.

The Father-heart of God

Parenting with Promise: this series is meant to convey that parenting is less about our techniques than about God's promises; more a matter of what we believe than what we do. Obviously parenting is practical, but it rightly stems from our belief in the promises of God. Tonight we begin with the heart of the matter - God's revelation of His Father-heart.

Where are Abraham, Isaac and Jacob?

When I read this passage, the thing that grabs me is not the main point Jesus is making. I am left feeling somewhat sad that my marriage with my wife will not continue in heaven. Heaven doesn't sound so good after all! I think Jesus is telling me that I have missed the point. I think he's saying that there is a bit of a Sadducee in me. There is something in me that has not grasped the full reality of the resurrection.

Children worshiping God with us

For better or for worse, one of our distinctives at WPC Belconnen is that we have our children join with us as we worship God. Why is that? Is it because we don't have the resources to run a proper kid's church? Are we stuck in a rut? We need to explore this issue afresh.
A glimpse of a gospel church

Pastor Geoff Findlay with the final sermon in our series from Romans:
Far from being a boring list of names of people we don’t know, this final chapter provides us with a glimpse of a gospel church in action. Here is a real church with real people with real names. This reminds us that that we are not only a church with a mission, we are a church of people – people in whom God takes a vital interest.

Spiritual surgery

Do Christians still sin? Yes. Are we forgiven? Yes. Is our sin serious? Yes. But do we say "yes" because it is the right answer, whilst living as if the answer is really "no"? Jesus has some pretty radical things to say to us here about our sin. Aron Ralston, a mountain climber, who experienced severe difficulties in Canyonlands, Utah, can help us understand what Jesus means.

What are we left with at the end of Romans - a mere travelogue? Elijah lived in a nation which followed mixed religions, leading to false prayer to false gods. Elijah began with true, "effective" prayer accompanied by repentance which "avails much": upon seeing God's power in the fire on Mt Carmel, the people turned back to Him and put away their idolatry.
