Quest #2 - Announce Freedom (Part 3)

With more than 7 million prisoners in the United States alone, there is an abundance of persons to whom we may "proclaim freedom" in the name of Jesus but is that what Jesus really meant? Are those behind concrete walls and steel bars the only ones to whom we have been called to minister? The apostle Paul tells us that the people who are in prison are far greater in number than simply those convicted of crimes and the job of announcing freedom far larger than we might have imagined. Still, as the body of Christ, we are called to carry on the Jesus' mission until his return. What is it that we are supposed to do?

Where Do I Fit? (Part 1)

Based on Jesus reading the words of Isaiah in the synagogue, we ask ourselves how we fit in the the world, the church and the Body of Christ. This is the introduction to a series entitled "The Five Quests of the Christian Life" and through Paul we understand that we all were not called to be the same or to doe the same things. Instead, as followers of Jesus, we are called to pursue the things that he did. We inherit the mission of Jesus and must choose for ourselves from among these Five Quests. Which quest will you choose?

Secrets and Mysteries

The magi were among the first to worship Jesus, Gentile leaders from another nation. Who is Jesus? Who may worship him? How can God proclaim that all nations and kings will bow down to a single king? How will that king be able to deliver the needy and the afflicted or rescue the weak and the needy from oppression and violence? Aren't the needs of the poor too great? Out of scripture there are many mysteries, but here we discover the one king unlike any other who unites the world and opens a path for all humanity to approach God without fear but with freedom and confidence.

The Garments of Faith

Many of our friends and neighbors will never enter the door of a church. The only Jesus they will ever meet is you. Knowing that you are a Christian, they will assume that Jesus is like you. What kind of a Jesus will they meet? Will they meet a Jesus that is hostile and selfish, or a Jesus that is patient, thoughtful, generous and kind? We are asked to put on garments of faith that make us distinct from the world around us. As we put on Jesus, we wonder how well we will wear his clothes?

Be A World Changer

An advent message that could equally well be preached almost anytime. the followes of God need not be spectacular or wealthy, or well educated. God has a habit of using nondescript, faithful people who are remarkable only in being average and transforming them into "World Changers." Jesus invites each of us to move beyond the emptiness of church by habit, to move beyond the rituals and the pot-luck suppers and discover transformation. Christ invites us into a new kind of relationship that moves beyond empty "churchiness" and is filled with passion and action. Jesus invites us to discover something bigger than ourselves.

Obstacles: Is His Message- Our Message

Our lives are full of obstacles and "stuff" to occupy our minds and our time. How can we not only overcome our own obstacles but answer the call of John the Baptist and become the people who tear down the obstacles of others. Only when we answer the call to tear down the obstacles of others can they hear the Good News of Jesus Christ and the Good News of Christmas.
