The Creation of Faith

Why do different people respond to Jesus in different ways? It has to do with the kind of faith that they have. For some the ministry of Jesus created real, but immature faith. For others the ministry of Jesus created defiance. Jesus responded to the two very differently. In this story, Jesus rebukes and leaves the defiant; he challenges and comforts the immature.

A King for All Nations

Jesus came to be a king. Jesus was a Jew. But Jesus did not come to be just a king for the Jews. He is a king for all nations. And all nations must submit to him.

Fixing Real Problems

What is our real problem? Many people think that our real problems are the things around us. If we could only fix our spouse (or get a different one), fix our job (or get a different one), have better health, or more money, all our problems would be solved. Jesus challenges that by reminding us that our greatest problem is not what's around us. Our greatest problem is what is in us. It is our heart.

Tradition vs. Revelation

Everywhere that man goes, he develops hierarchies and religious ritual. It satisfies the need for power and religion. Yet when it comes to our relationship with God, we have to think carefully about how we get to God. What should we believe and do? The answer for many is found in religious tradition and religious ritual. The answer for Jesus was entirely different.

Feeding and Walking

Jesus used very ordinary things in extraordinary ways to demonstrate his rule over all creation and his care for people. When he fed 5000 people, he met their physical needs in way that showed his disciples his great power. When he walked on the water, he showed his authority over nature in a way that terrified his disciples. By understanding Jesus' power, we should not be surprised at Jesus demand for submission.

Shepherdless Sheep

When Jesus saw people wondering like lost sheep, his first response was not to do great miracles for them but to teach them because shepherdless sheep need spiritual leadership, and that only comes from teaching God's truth.

The Power of a King

Kings have power, or at least they used to. The way that they used their power showed much about their character. Herod used his power as a coward to kill his enemies who had done nothing wrong. Jesus uses his power to save his enemies and send them out on mission for him.

It's Time to Get Busy

While learning is good, there comes a time when it is time to get busy. Jesus did not intend for his disciples to be with him all the time. He trained them for ministry and sent them out so that they could do the work he had trained them to do.

Amazing Jesus

What does it take to amaze someone who has seen it all? What does it take to amaze someone who has made it all? What does it take to amaze someone who rules over it all? The people of Nazareth show us and Mark passes it on for us to learn. Amazing Jesus is not a good thing.
