Jesus Against the Demons

When Jesus taught people, people were amazed at his authority in teaching. When Jesus taught people, the demons were terrified. But even in their fear they could not resist the authority of Jesus. At Capernaum, Jesus casts out a demon and the people are amazed. But amazement is not enough. Jesus wants submission because he is the king.

The Claims of the King

Who’s in charge here? Whenever you encounter a situation of chaos, that is the question that people ask. It reminds us of something we all know to be true—that a person who is in charge has a responsibility to lead, and everyone else has a responsibility to follow. Often when caught in a bad situation, a subordinate will say, “I was just following orders.” Such an appeal recognizes the authority of a leader.
The man Jesus was a leader, but a leader of a different kind. He was not an employer, or a military leader. He was not a parent or a teacher. He was a king coming to rule over his kingdom. In this kingdom, Jesus would have authority over everything. In this kingdom, everyone would be held responsible to submit themselves to the king.
Today, as we look at Mark’s account of the beginning of Jesus ministry, we see that Jesus was calling people to follow him because he was bringing a kingdom. One’s response to this call of Jesus showed their relationship to the King. As a King, Jesus was also a servant. In this interesting comparison, we see that the King takes responsibility to serve those in his kingdom giving them hope and life.

What You Need to Know to Get Started

Nothing can be more intimidating to people than the unknown. If we are honest with ourselves, we all at some point have great fear about the things we do not know. That fear can lead to indecision because indecision is often driven by the unknown. The “what if” questions multiply in our minds and we are paralyzed by the fear of not knowing the outcome of a choice.
Yet not all of life has to be lived in fear of the unknown because there are many things we can know. At the center of the things we do know is the good news about Jesus Christ, the Son of God. God has graciously told us about Christ so that we can understand who he was and what he did for us, and so that we have eternal life through him.
Today, as we begin our study of the Gospel according to Mark, we talk about three things you need to know right from the beginning. These three things help the rest of the life and death of Jesus make greater sense for us. It helps us to understand why Jesus is the only hope for all of humanity.

The Mission of the Church

Nothing is more discouraging and disillusioning than a meaningless existence. All throughout human history, people have tried various things in order to find meaning in life. But one thing that most people have never found in the meaning of life when it is connected with the mission of the church that Jesus is building.
Just before Jesus returned to heaven, he gave his followers a mission. That mission has been passed down to us for two thousand years so that our mission today is the same as it was for the followers of Jesus they day he ascended back into heaven. And that mission is simple: Build local churches full of disciples.
Today, as we end our series on Being the Church, we are going to look at the teaching of Jesus on what the church was to do, and see how that looked in the early years of the church. It is vitally important that we, as a church, understand what it is we are supposed to be doing so that we can find meaning through the mission that Jesus has given to us.

Diversity in the Church

What’s in a body? Well, a lot of parts. All of them useful for one thing or another. Some of them, we can live without, but then our body doesn’t function like it should. Our bodies work best when everything works the way God intended it to work.
The Bible’s use of a “body” to help us understand the church is a very important one because we all know what a body is like. Now, imagine that your body only had one part. What would it be? In fact, given the option of being all one body part, most of us would not have a clue about which body part to choose.
In Ephesians 4:7-16, Paul speaks of the diversity of the body. Though we are one body in Christ, it is necessary for each individual part of the body to do its part so that the body is built up and functioning properly.
Today, as we talk about the diversity of the body, check yourself to see if you are helping to build up the body.

Unity in the Body

One of the images that the Bible uses of the church is that of a body. It is an image that speaks in part of unity. The church, with all its diversity of people, is a unified body of people. In Ephesians 4:1-6, Paul speaks of the unity of body as something which every believer must pursue. You, as a part of Grace Baptist Church, are responsible for the unity of Grace Baptist Church. Because we share a common belief in the teachings of Christianity, we have a duty to maintain unity in the body of Christ. Today, we talk about that great responsibility and what it requires from us. We must pursue unity together because God has called us to unity. This morning we look at the things that we have in common, and look at the life that we should lead together.

Supporting the Church

The church of Jesus Christ is a unique institution. It is made up of people who have committed their lives to follow Christ as their lord and savior, and who have banded together to follow Christ and to encourage each other to follow Christ. The Christian who lives according to the Bible is closely connected and involved with a local church where they attend regularly, are involved in ministry, and support the work financially.

Today, we address the sometimes touchy issue of financial giving to the church. Many people charge the church with always begging for money. No doubt, for some churches, that is a valid charge.

However, the Bible does give us some teaching on the topic of money and the church. As we look at that teaching today, we want to see what God says about the financial support of the church. As we look at the Scriptures together this morning, look at your own heart and your own habits. Are you being obedient to God’s command?

Growing Up Growing Together

God has called us to be the church. To do that, we must grow up in our faith and must grow together in our fellowship. In 1 Corinthians 3:1-17, Paul addresses the topic of spiritual maturity and church unity. He calls on believers to grow up and grow together.
