Jesus' Real Family

Jesus states that his real family consists of people who hear God's word and put it into practice (Luke 8:21). There are a lot of obstacles to hearing God's word and doing what He says. That's what the parable of the soils is all about (Luke 8:4-15). There are three types of obstacles to hearing and doing God's word (Satan, the flesh, and worries, riches, and pleasures). There is only one type of good soil (a person' s heart) that bears fruit from the seed that is sown. That person hears the word of God and does it! Which soil are you?

Loving Jesus Much

Luke 7:36-50 is a story about loving Jesus much. We should love Jesus with much emotion and devotion, like the woman who cried and wiped Jesus' feet with her hair. We can do this because we love Jesus much for being forgiven much, just like the woman in the story.

It's a Battle Out There

There is a spiritual battle Christ-followers face daily. It is a real battle, but one that is not easily seen by us. Satan and his legion are our enemies, and we need to take a defensive position against them.

Disappointed with Jesus

Have you ever been (or maybe you are now) disappointed with Jesus? Are you wondering if you've been missing something when it comes to Jesus? You aren't alone. John the Baptist was disappointed with Jesus in Luke 7. His disappointment came from Jesus not being what he expected. There is a second kind of disappointment in this passage. Some people are disappointed in Jesus because He is not what they demand Him to be. Jesus responds to John's disappointment (he gives a faith building reply to John), and to those who demand what He is to be and do.

Amazing Jesus

In Luke 7, there are several amazing things that happen. Jesus is amazed by the faith shown by a Roman soldier. Jesus heals the man's servant by just saying the word. Jesus has amazing authority, even authority over death! He brings the dead son of a widow back to life. Jesus has amazing compassion. His authority is coupled with compassion.

The Hunt for the Newborn King

Matthew 2 is the story after Christ's birth when the Magi seek this newborn king and Herod also tries to seek him, though not to worship him. There are four themes in this passage: Royalty (Christ is presented as a king), Protection (the king is going to be hunted and God provides protection), Fulfillment (God fulfills Old Testament prophecies), and Suffering (the king and those around him suffer). There are also three different types of people in this story. There are some who hunt to worship Jesus (the Magi), some who hunt to kill Jesus (Herod), and some who didn't bother to hunt him at all (everyone else in Jerusalem). What kind of person are you? Are you hunting for Jesus to worship him? Are you his enemy? Or are you sitting on the fence doing nothing? Jesus is worthy of our worship.

O Little Town of Bethlehem

Seven hundred years before Jesus was born, God made a promise that the Messiah would come through the little town of Bethlehem in Micah 5:2-5. God surprises Bethlehem (and us!) by bringing the Savior from this very tiny place. And He keeps His promise to them. God promised to King David (who also came from Bethlehem) an eternal throne and a king from his line that would reign forever (2 Samuel 7). God will take care of Bethlehem (and us).

Jesus' Followers Are Different: Part 4

Jesus' followers can be recognized by the way they live. Jesus teaches his disciples this by an illustration of trees and fruit (v. 44). Fruit is the product of a particular kind of tree. Pears are not produced by briars or thornbushes, but from pear trees. Our hearts are like trees and what we say or do is the fruit. Our actions and words show what kind of hearts we have. Jesus goes on to say that his disciples do what He does. You can tell a disciple by his or her actions, by the fruit of their lives.

Jesus' Followers Are Different: Part 3

Jesus' followers are different; they act differently than the world does. His followers are gracious because they know God is gracious with them (v. 37 & 38). We are not supposed to be judgmental; we are to forgive and give to others. His followers are also discerning because they know that they will become like their teacher (v. 39). We need to think about who we are listening to all of the time, because we will become like them. Jesus' followers are humble because they know that they are sinners, too. We need to humble ourselves (see the plank in our own eye) before we remove a speck from our brother's eye.
